Birmingham City face one problem that Ipswich didn’t have two years ago.

Birmingham City hope to make their impact in the Championship after storming to the League One title.

Birmingham City aspire to join the ranks of the few clubs that have advanced from League One to the Premier League in consecutive seasons. Last summer, Blues hired Chris Davies to undertake on ‘a journey’ with them and attracted such talent that their tenure in League One was always going to be brief. Now that the Blues have returned to the Championship, the ultimate goal is to follow in the footsteps of Ipswich Town in 2024, who went from League One to the Premier League in consecutive seasons. The Tractor Boys joined Watford, Norwich City, and Southampton as the fourth team to accomplish this accomplishment since the Premier League’s inception.

Blues breezed through their first promotion with an EFL-record 111 points, but can they match Ipswich’s performance? While the two teams share many similarities, not least the playing style and the fact that the Blues already have an XI in place to start the season in August, there is one significant difference. Ipswich were able to go under the spotlight to begin with, whereas the Blues will not have that luxury due to their record-breaking season and transfer spending last summer, not to mention the £3 billion Sports Quarter that is simmering away in the background.

Benjamin Bloom, an Ipswich supporter and EFL YouTuber, told the Keep Right On Podcast: “The one thing that Ipswich had that Birmingham City will not have is the whole globe, and his mother can see Birmingham approaching. No one saw Ipswich coming. “You mentioned the stat, 12 victories in 14 – even as an Ipswich fan, I’m thinking, ‘OK, if we can ride this out, we might go into the play-offs here’. Nobody predicted it would reach 96 points. “From the start, everyone expects Birmingham to have a successful season. ‘OK, three year-one parachute payout teams, plus Sheffield United…’

“Who is the next team they mention? It’s not Middlesbrough, it’s not Norwich, it’s not West Brom, it’s not Watford, it’s Birmingham.”
