Birmingham City new stadium: Latest plans, location and expected capacity.
Birmingham City’s home stadium, St Andrew’s Stadium, has been in use since 1906. However, the club may soon relocate to a new stadium that will modernise and elevate their performance.
It appears strange that just a few months after the club was relegated from the Championship, the owners, Knighthead, have ambitious plans for the club. Our guide below contains all of the essential information about the new Birmingham City stadium, from the most recent updates to the estimated capacity.
Birmingham City’s New Stadium: Latest Developments
Birmingham City is still targeting a 2029 completion date.
When Birmingham City’s plans for a new stadium were announced, the club made it clear that they wanted the venue completed by the end of 2029.
Speaking on the matter nearly a year after it was first announced, Wagner stated: “I believe we are hearing the right statements now, and we need the right action. I am confident that we will receive it.
“I think Richard Parker [West Midlands mayor] is doing an exceptional job of providing us with the support that we need to make those things happen, but we’ve got to keep pushing ahead.”
Before going on to explain the project’s significance to the Birmingham community, he stated: “We can take one of England’s most deprived areas and completely transform it economically.
“That alone makes it a worthwhile project for us. For us, it’s about demonstrating a genuine commitment to Birmingham rather than just the club.”
Wagner renews his commitment to the project.
Although many have suggested that the current plans are far too ambitious given the club’s current status in the third tier of English football, the owners have remained steadfast in their determination to see them through.
In a recent open meeting with the club’s supporters, the chairman, Tom Wagner, stated:
“We are heavily involved in complex planning and negotiations that will lay the groundwork for the development of the Sports Quarter. Our heads are down, and we are fully committed to completing the work required to make this vision a reality.
“While we are not yet in a position to share every detail, please know that we are making progress. Our commitment remains unwavering, and we ask for your continued trust as we move through the process.
“Try not to rely on every word we say, every press release we read, or every tweet we see from across town. Your trust and belief in our vision are extremely important to us, and we hope that you have faith that every action, utterance, and strategic decision is guided by a well-conceived plan.”
Stadium plans revealed.
Earlier this year, Birmingham City announced the purchase of a 48-acre site in east Birmingham and revealed plans for a new world-class stadium. If everything goes as planned, the site, formerly known as Birmingham Wheels, will be transformed into a new sports quarter, which is quite ambitious.
They have since purchased 12 additional acres of land adjacent to the former Wheels site. The club is said to be looking to build something similar to Manchester City’s Etihad Campus, which houses all of the club’s training facilities as well as its stadium.
Because of the vast size of the land purchased by the club, there is also room for office buildings, restaurants, bars, and socialising areas for fans. Knigthead is said to want the complex to be used year-round rather than just on match days, and it has the potential to transform Birmingham’s east side.
The area is within walking distance of the city centre, and Knighthead claims that the “world-class Sports Quarter” will generate 3,000 jobs.
Do Birmingham City need a new stadium?
St Andrew’s has appeared tired for many years, but the club spent a fortune on renovations in 2023. This summer, they also upgraded the stadium’s hospitality areas, but they have decided to leave and relocate to a new location.
Fans understandably have a preference for St Andrew’s, but the new site is literally next door to the current stadium, so there will be no debate about the new Birmingham City stadium’s location.
How will the new Birmingham City stadium look?
When the plans were first announced, concept art was released, giving fans a glimpse of what the stadium and surrounding area could look like if everything went as planned. At the time, Wagner was keen to stress that he wanted to build something that is in line with the rest of the city.
While concept art depicts a stadium that resembles a spaceship, Wagner emphasised that the stadium’s final design has yet to be determined. Architects are still working on these designs, and an update may be provided in due course.
Wagner commented on the stadium’s appearance as follows:
“I’m not sure if we’ll go with the spaceship look, but I think it (the concept art) gives you a good idea of what our intention is.
“Maybe the most important aspect is this massive promenade where people are entering because not everyone will be able to watch the game in the stadium because all 62,000 seats are obviously sold out.
“We want something that fits in the community and critically it’s important that this doesn’t look like a blight on the skyline of Birmingham and that it fits within the context of the city and more importantly, the neighbourhood.”

What is the capacity of the new Birmingham City stadium?
The capacity plans are certainly ambitious, with early indications putting the new stadium’s capacity at 62,000. Last season, Birmingham struggled to consistently sell out St Andrew’s, which has a capacity of 29,409.
Their average attendance in 2023/24 was just 21,180, so going from that to 62,000 seems like a stretch. The stadium is intended to be multi-functional, with the club’s owners hoping to host NFL games as well as major concerts.
With a capacity of 62,000, it would be England’s fifth-largest football stadium.
When will Birmingham City’s new stadium be built?
Wagner has admitted that the planned completion date is also quite ambitious. They want the entire project finished by 2029 so that Birmingham City can play their home games in the new stadium during the 2029/30 season.
This gives the club five seasons to make it back to the Premier League. Otherwise, they risk having at least half of the stadium empty in the lower divisions, which would reflect poorly on the club and its owners.
Regarding the construction timeline, Wagner stated:
“My timeframe is insane, but we’ll try to finish this in five years. In an ideal world, if everyone works at the same pace, we’d be willing to work. I’m going to continue saying it, even if it makes people sweat. A lot of it is beyond our control, but that is the goal.
FGG says: A new beginning for a waking giant.
Birmingham City is a club on the rise. With new ownership and high transfer fees, the club has quickly risen to League One. Now, with a new stadium in the works, the club may be laying the groundwork for decades.
The Birmingham City new stadium project is still a long way off, but given the club’s rise, it is possible that they will play fixtures there in the Championship, though that could well be the Premier League by then. Regardless of where they play league games, Birmingham City will soon be playing at their new stadium.
