Birmingham City’s impressive EFL record can only be matched by League Two surprise package

Birmingham City’s impressive EFL record can only be matched by League Two surprise package

All eyes will be on Birmingham City this season as they look to secure back-to-back promotions to reach the Premier League, but one League Two club is matching them every step of the way in one department.

After their dominance in League One last term, it’s no surprise that Birmingham City are being tipped by many to succeed again this season and at least secure a top-six spot in the Championship.

Those verdicts were backed up by what we saw from Birmingham City vs Ipswich Town on the opening night of the new season, with the Blues looking really impressive.

There’s a long way to go, of course, but the early signs are promising for Chris Davies and his players. They take a solid record into the next game, too, but they’re not the only ones on an impressive run.

Birmingham City and Gillingham hold longest unbeaten run in EFL

As things stand, the Blues are on a 14-match unbeaten run, with their last league defeat coming way back in March away at Bolton Wanderers, with the Trotters triumphing 3-1 against the eventual League One champions.

Turns out, there is no team as consistent as Birmingham in the EFL apart from none other than Gillingham. The League Two outfit are also on a 14-game unbeaten run, and were also beaten 3-1 away from home on March 4th, losing to Newport County.

That was before current manager Gareth Ainsworth came on board, but he’s yet to lose a competitive match with the Gills.

Gillingham next face Tranmere Rovers in the league this coming weekend, while Birmingham travel to Blackburn Rovers for what could be a tricky tie.

There are only two sides who come close to Birmingham and Gillingham’s record, with Doncaster Rovers now 13 games unbeaten, and Stockport County unbeaten in 12.

Could promotion be on the cards for Birmingham City and Gillingham?

Gillingham were a million miles away from promotion last season, with that late flourish still only taking them to 17th place in the League Two table, 12 points off the play-off places.

Birmingham City, however, are one of the hot favourites to secure a play-off spot in the Championship this term.

In our Championship preview for 2025/26, we outlined the fact the Blues have made some brilliant signings but it will be very interesting to see how other teams approach them this year. One thing’s for sure, they should have less freedom to play than they did last season.

If we were to pick one team of these two to keep their runs going and secure promotion, it would certainly be Birmingham. However, it’s worth noting that Gillingham have already beaten last season’s play-off finalists, Walsall, this term.

In our League Two prediction for 2025/26, we did tip the Gills to land in the top seven and embark on a play-off adventure. Let’s see if we’re correct come May.
