Black Cats express condolences after tragic death of Portugal forward and his brother in Spain.
After Diogo Jota, a forward for Liverpool and Portugal, died tragically in a vehicle accident in Spain, Sunderland AFC
paid their respects to him.
Along with his brother, Andre, the 28-year-old was killed early Thursday morning in the northwest Spanish town of
Zamora. The Rias Bajas Highway (A-52) close to Palacios de Sanabria is where the collision occurred. Jota had been
celebrating his wedding only 10 days before. He left behind three children.
In a statement shared on social media in response to Liverpool’s tweet announcing the sad news, Sunderland wrote:
“Our thoughts are with Diogo’s family, friends, teammates, and everyone at Liverpool FC during this incredibly
difficult time. Rest in peace.”
Football fans from all around the world have been paying their respects to a player who is renowned for both his skill
and his professionalism and humility. Wolves, a former team, wrote: “We are devastated. Everyone who worked with
Diogo throughout his time at Wolves loved him, including our supporters and his teammates.
“The memories he created will never be forgotten,” the Premier League team added in their statement. Our thoughts
and prayers are with Diogo and his brother Andre’s family, friends, and loved ones. You will always be remembered
and sincerely missed.
The fatalities left the Portuguese football organisation “utterly devastated.” In addition to having almost 50 caps for
his country, they stated: “Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person who was respected by both opponents and
teammates. He had a contagious joy and was a reference in his own community.”
Portugal went on to say, “We have lost two champions,” in response to Jota’s tragic death. We shall make every effort
to uphold Diogo and Andre Silva’s legacy every day because their deaths constitute irreversible losses for Portuguese
football.
