Blackburn Rovers prepare for big change in club leadership, as reported
Steve Waggott of Blackburn Wants to Stay Another Year — Gestede is slated to succeed
According to reports, Blackburn Rovers CEO Steve Waggott hopes to stay with the team for another season despite
the club’s harsh criticism. Journalist Alan Nixon said as much when he broke the news on Patreon on Easter Sunday.
Rovers fans, who are dissatisfied with the Venky family’s management of the team, have long demanded a change in
ownership. Blackburn has fallen from the Premier League to League One since taking over, but they have since
stabilised with seven straight Championship seasons.
Waggott wants to stay for another season, according to Nixon, and then Rudy Gestede, who is currently in charge of
football operations, will likely take over as CEO. Fans might not be happy with the news, though, as Waggott and
Gestede have both received a lot of criticism lately and were even requested to avoid home games.
Even if a total ownership change is still the ideal course of action, many fans feel that the club has been poorly
governed on a daily basis, and decisions like these only serve to increase their discontent.
It’s difficult not to feel sorry for the Rovers supporters. It has been heartbreaking to watch the club’s downfall over
the last ten years. It felt like a gut punch to lose manager John Eustace earlier in the season. Eustace’s decision to
Joining Derby County, who are battling relegation, in spite of Blackburn’s playoff chances says a lot about the club’s
current situation.
Now, with promotion hopes dashed and League One still a looming threat, fans are watching their club drift toward
another forgettable finish.
The present situation in the Championship is as follows:
Position | Team | Played (P) | Goal Difference (GD) | Points (Pts) |
---|---|---|---|---|
9 | Millwall | 43 | -3 | 59 |
10 | Blackburn Rovers | 43 | 3 | 57 |
11 | Swansea City | 43 | -5 | 56 |
Unfortunately, the relationship between the club and its devoted fan base is still being harmed by the lack of a clear
vision, openness, and a sincere connection with supporters. Waggott and Gestede’s support for ownership hasn’t
helped either, and because there aren’t any indications that significant changes will occur anytime soon, optimism at
Ewood Park is waning.
Ideally, a new beginning with new owners would reignite the passion. Fans, however, are currently preparing for yet
another tumultuous period in the Rovers’ history.
