Bolton Wanderers offer terms to ex-Wrexham man Sam Dalby

Bolton Wanderers offer terms to ex-Wrexham man Sam Dalby.

Wanderers have presented a case to sought-after free agent Sam Dalby in an attempt to get him to the Toughsheet Stadium next season.

A number of League One clubs, as well as Scottish Premiership side Dundee United, are interested in the 25-year-old striker, who can also play in the Europa League. Dalby spent last season on loan at Tannadice, and he credits regular games in Scotland with significantly boosting his skills following a couple disappointing seasons with Wrexham. He rejected down an extended contract offer from Phil Parkinson’s side in January and finished with 15 goals in all competitions, his greatest return to date.

Wanderers are believed to have made an offer to Dalby’s representation, with sources close to the player claiming the salaries on offer in England are much better than what he might expect north of the border. Steven Schumacher is looking for a player to anchor his new-look assault, and he has identified a few potential ‘number nines’ who he believes can make an impact. Dalby began his career at Leyton Orient before being signed by Leeds United as a teenager. Despite failing to make the first team, he joined Watford in the Premier League a year later after a brief loan spell with Morecambe.

He spent more time on loan in the National League with Stockport and Woking, appearing once in the FA Cup for the Hornets before joining Southend United and played his first full season, scoring ten goals.

That paved the way for a move to Wrexham in August 2022, and while 54 of his 88 appearances for the Welsh side came as a substitute as they were promoted from the National League and League Two, his success on loan with Dundee United last season prompted them to try to extend his contract. Speaking to The Leader earlier this year, Phil Parkinson explained why he did not recall the striker, who was at the time in excellent form in the SPL.  “I had a good chat with Sam the other day and I am pleased for him,” he said. “Obviously we spoke to him in January about extending his contract and we didn’t want to call him back.

“I know there were times when we weren’t scoring goals and it was talked, but I didn’t want to call him back since we were trying to bring new players in. “I figured if I called him back and he didn’t make the squad, he’d be really frustrated, so we wanted to keep him there. “But, with his performances for Dundee United, he has put himself in a strong position to secure a contract someplace.
