Boro’s travelling to increase next season as Championship line-up is confirmed

Middlesbrough will clock more miles travelling to Championship games this season than in any of the last few seasons after losing two of their closest rivals.

This weekend saw the final 24-team Championship field for the 2025-26 season locked in as Sunderland beat Sheffield United to Premier League promotion in the play-off final, while Charlton won the League One equivalent to earn promotion to the second tier.

Charlton’s promotion means Boro will have three trips to the capital next season, as the Londoners join Millwall and QPR in the Championship. Compounding what was a miserable season for Boro, nearest rivals Leeds United and Sunderland both head to the Premier League along with Burnley.

While losing two of their shortest trips, rejoining the Championship from the Premier League are Southampton, Ipswich and Leicester City, with the former two representing mammoth journeys for Boro next term. Even Leicester is an increase in distance to Burnley.

At the other end, Boro lost one of their long journeys to South Wales as Cardiff City’s long flirtation with relegation to League One finally saw them fall through the trap door. Gone too are trips to Kenilworth Road and the longest journey of the season to Plymouth Argyle.

While that means Boro’s travelling doesn’t increase significantly next term, it’s still an increase when adding in the trips to London, Wrexham and Birmingham. Next season will see Boro meet Wrexham in league action for the first time in the clubs’ histories, with this their first visit to the Racecourse Ground since an FA Cup clash in 1999. It will only be the fourth and fifth competitive meeting between the two sides ever.

All added up, going stadium to stadium next seaso.
