Bradford City boss discusses trialist defender Jack Hunt

Bradford City boss discusses trialist defender Jack Hunt.

JACK Hunt is still unsure if he will be offered a permanent position with City. The former Sheffield Wednesday and Huddersfield fullback has appeared in all four preseason games.

He has been training with Graham Alexander’s squad throughout the preseason, having joined as one of three trialists in the first week.

Yanic Wildschut left before the team travelled to Austria, and Tyler Magloire has also moved on. The Bradford-born centre half had attended the training camp in Obertraun but did not play against Middlesbrough on Wednesday.

Hunt, who was released by Bristol Rovers in the summer, came on as a 73rd-minute substitute for Max Power and played left wing-back after three previous appearances on the right, a versatility that Graham Alexander values.

City completed the permanent signing of Everton midfielder Jenson Metcalfe yesterday, making him the window’s ninth arrival. However, the squad is nearly full of players aged 21 and up, so defender Hunt is unsure whether the club will be able to make an offer to him.

“I don’t know yet,” admitted City manager Alexander, who has been impressed by the 34-year-old. “I haven’t promised Jack anything, but he’s having a great time.

“He’s obviously a good player who has played at a high level, and his fitness levels have been very good throughout preseason.

“It’s as if we’re looking at him while he’s looking at us. We may not be able to do anything, but I have made no promises to him. “He wanted to remain here. I believe he has other interests, but we’ll see how that pans out.

Magloire, a second cousin of former City favourite Joe Cooke, left at the beginning of the week. Alexander continued: “We looked at him and the centre halves we had. Tyler and Jack came in just to get fit.

“We needed a couple of players to improve our numbers, and they were unattached. “We know them both. Tyler was at Motherwell, and Jack and Chris played together at Huddersfield many years ago.

“They both got in touch and asked to come to training, and that was it. There were no promises, either way. “Tney has opportunities at other clubs, and we don’t want to stand in their way if that’s the case.

Tyler has moved on, but Jack remains with us for the time being. Meanwhile, City are keeping an eye on injured duo Ciaran Kelly and Neill Byrne, but both are doubtful for the season opener against Wycombe a week from tomorrow.

Byrne left the Boro game after landing awkwardly while jumping over a sliding challenge.

Kelly tweaked his groin during a sprint relay training session last Thursday. Alexander explained: “We wanted to wait until we got back to England for a scan, and I believe he got one this week. “We’ll see how that goes.

He’s not sure; he said it felt worse on Thursday but has improved since he returned. “I hate jumping ahead trying to second-guess medical stuff but fingers crossed they will both be okay.”
