Bradford City: Manager’s Update on Progress of Andy Cook
Andy Cook has unfinished business at Valley Parade—and he’s determined to show it. The prolific striker, who netted 28 goals in all competitions during the 2022-23 season, is steadily working his way back from a long-term injury that has kept him sidelined for the majority of the current campaign. Bradford City boss Graham Alexander has now provided a positive update on Cook’s recovery, emphasising both the striker’s progress and his value to the squad.
Cook, who suffered a serious knee injury during pre-season training, has not featured for the Bantams since the early stages of the 2023-24 season. His absence has been keenly felt by a side that has often lacked cutting edge in front of goal. However, Alexander insists the striker remains fully motivated and is showing the kind of hunger that made him a fan favourite at Valley Parade.
“Andy’s been working incredibly hard behind the scenes,” Alexander said. “He’s desperate to get back on the pitch and contribute. You can see it in every session he’s been involved in with the medical and fitness staff. He’s got that fire in him, that unfinished business mindset, and that’s exactly what we want to see from a senior player.”
The 33-year-old forward, who signed a new contract last summer, is now entering the final stages of his rehabilitation. While no fixed date has been set for his return to full match action, Alexander hinted that Cook could be back in contention before the end of the season, provided there are no setbacks.
“We’re not putting any pressure on Andy or rushing his comeback,” Alexander explained. “But things are moving in the right direction. If all goes well, we could see him feature in the latter part of the campaign, which would be a massive boost for everyone—on and off the pitch.”
Cook’s influence extends beyond just goals. His physical presence, aerial threat, and hold-up play have been sorely missed in a Bradford side that has struggled for consistency. His leadership qualities also make him a key figure in the dressing room, particularly for younger players adapting to the demands of League Two football.
“He’s not just a goal scorer,” added Alexander. “He’s a leader. The younger lads look up to him, and his experience is invaluable when we’re trying to build momentum during a tough season.”
The manager’s words come at a time when City are seeking to mount a late push for the play-off positions. With several attacking options currently underperforming or battling their own fitness issues, Cook’s return could be the spark needed to reignite their campaign.
For now, Cook remains focused on his recovery, attending every matchday to support his teammates and staying mentally sharp. His message to fans has been one of gratitude and determination.
“I’ll be back,” he said recently in a club interview. “There’s still a lot I want to achieve here with this group.”
And if his recovery continues to go as planned, Bradford City may just get their talisman back in time for a critical run-in—still chasing the success he firmly believes is within reach.
