Hearts name their 28-man squad for Spain – new signings and Lawrence Shankland contract latest.

Derek McInnes, the new head coach at Tynecastle, faces EFL opponents. Hearts will fly to Spain early on Saturday morning for a week-long pre-season training camp, with a 28-man travelling team.
Lawrence Shankland, as predicted, is not featured because he is out of contract, however he is still in talks with the club regarding a new deal.
Derek McInnes, the new manager, brings the club to south-east Spain for warm-weather training in temperatures that could reach 35 degrees next week. Hearts will face English League Two club Crawley Town during the trip before returning to Scotland on Saturday, July 5. The Edinburgh club’s first competitive encounter under McInnes will be against Dunfermline Athletic in the Premier Sports Cup on Saturday, July 12, at Tynecastle Park. By then, players will have been training under new management for more than three weeks, but the majority of the hard work will take place in south-east Spain during the following week.
The full 28-man Hearts squad is listed below, with Shankland a notable absentee. The striker is open to the prospect of re-signing at Hearts having held several rounds of talks with McInnes, who is eager to keep him. So far, there has been no agreement. Tynecastle officials have made it clear that they will not wait indefinitely for the Scotland internationalist and will explore other options in an effort to add another forward to their squad for the season ahead.

McInnes highlighted Hearts’ aspirations for additional signings earlier this week. “We’re still trying to bring in a couple of players in key positions,” he told me. “In some locations, we have more than enough. In defence, we appear to be very powerful and have many of alternatives. We have size, experience, and athletic ability in those areas. I have made it known that I am searching for a wide-right player. Looking at our roster, it’s important to consider who can fit into our style of play.
“I don’t believe we have too much to do. I have a lot of good players in this building. It’s difficult to make rapid assessments in a few days. Normally, a manager will say it’s a blank slate for everyone, and I believe the players are experiencing this. They’re attempting to show me that they have a role to perform. However, if I bring in another two, I will need to make decisions on a number of them much sooner. The squad will then be too big, so those discussions will be about Spain and beyond. Right now, everyone has the possibility to be here.”
