Bright Osayi-Samuel reveals ‘special’ Tom Wagner chat and why Birmingham City will thank his dad

Bright Osayi— Samuel is aiming for the Premier League after being sold by Birmingham City.

Blues have made a strong start to the summer transfer window, with Phil Neumann, James Beadle, Tommy Doyle, Demarai Gray, and Osayi-Samuel all joining.

Osayi-Samuel, who has 22 caps for Nigeria, has spent the previous four years with Turkish powerhouse Fenerbahce and joins the Blues on a free transfer.
When asked what drew him to the Second City, Osayi-Samuel told Blues+, “I believe it was the project. I chatted with the owner and the manager, and it all boils down to their objectives.

“They performed well last season by being promoted, but the goal is not simply to compete, but to advance directly to the Premier League, which is also my goal. Birmingham City has given me a platform to do so.”

The leader of Knighthead, Wagner, certainly left an influence on Osayi-Samuel.

The 27-year-old continued, “I spoke with the owner, and he is a very remarkable man! He gets right to the point. And that’s what I’ve learned, so my goal is to win every game and make opponents fear us from the start.

“The Championship is a long season and the teams that win consistently are up there, that’s my ambition home and away.”

Osayi-Samuel is well-known among Blues fans, having scored a fantastic solo goal on his last visit to St Andrew’s while playing for Queens Park Rangers in 2019.

Osayi-Samuel was a winger back then, but he has since switched to right-back in Turkey, and the Blues anticipate him to play that position.

He stated, “I started as a left-winger, then moved to the right, then played as a wing-back, and now I’m a right-back.” I don’t really have a preferred position – as long as they don’t put me as ‘keeper or centre-back!

“For me it’s about having the opportunity to play and show everyone what I can do.”

Osayi-Samuel has played in the Champions League and nine times in Fenerbahce’s Europa League last-16 run last season, but he isn’t content with his achievements and wants to experience life in the Premier League.

There will be no pats on the back, since Osayi-Samuel’s father will not allow it.

“For me and the way my dad raised me, it’s never enough, you can always do better,” he talked about. “I remember scoring two goals against Cardiff City when I was at QPR, and when I contacted my father, he asked, ‘Why didn’t you get a hat-trick?’

“That’s what I’ve been taught my entire life. I don’t settle; I constantly believe I can do better.”
