‘Brilliant record’ – EFL side urged to appoint Chris Wilder after Sheffield United exit by pundit
Don Goodman, a pundit, has advised Leicester City to take Chris Wilder into consideration after Sheffield United
fired him.
Last month, Sheffield United decided to sever their relationship with their previous manager. Ruben Selles, a former
manager of Southampton, Reading, and Hull City, has subsequently joined SUFC.
Last season, Wilder, 57, led the Blades to third place, behind Burnley and Leeds United. But they fell short against
Sunderland in the play-off final.
“I think Chris Wilder’s pedigree at Championship level is still very high, most people would probably feel he’s been
treated very harshly by Sheffield United, and he accumulated 92 points if you add on the two points deducted last
season, which is a brilliant record,” Goodman stated, expressing his belief that he would be a good fit for Leicester
City, according to Football League World.
“This raises the question of whether Leicester City will be a very desirable place to work and how many points will be
subtracted if they do.”
“It would be an attractive job if they start on an even keel. You would suspect the owners are keen to bounce back at
the first attempt, and in saying all that, that would mean the name Chris Wilder should be someone that they’d be
considering,” he continued.
Leicester City urged to appoint Chris Wilder after Sheffield United exit
Sheffield United’s decision to let go of Wilder was a risk. After a bad run of play at the close of the previous season,
Hull City fired Selles, SUFC’s replacement.
The Tigers only managed to stay ahead on goal differential. On the last day, they drew 1-1 away at Portsmouth, and
their only victory came from Luton Town’s defeat at West Brom.
Wilder has been with the Blades twice. During his first term, he led them from League One to the Premier League.
In 2023, he went back to Bramall Lane for another attempt at the top position. The former defender has also held
positions at Watford, Middlesbrough, Oxford United, and Northampton Town.
What now for Sheffield United?
Sheffield United will want to bounce back from their Wembley loss with promotion next term. SUFC will hope to
keep hold of their most prized assets over the next couple of months.
The Blades have the opportunity to add a few fresh players. Selles will want to make his mark on his newly acquired
team.
Leicester City is now searching for a new head coach. Following Ruud van Nistelrooy’s recent departure, they will be
considering their alternatives.
The Foxes finished in the bottom three and were eliminated from the top division. They lost to Southampton and
Ipswich Town.
