Callum Wilson once mocked West Ham’s only major achievement for 45 years – now he’s signing for them
Callum Wilson is expected to sign with West Ham, the team he once openly derided for their lone significant
accomplishment in nearly 40 years.
Many fans, who have not forgotten Callum Wilson’s numerous previous jabs at the Hammers, are already upset over
the departure.
Despite the fact that the majority of the remarks were made in jest, the striker has always annoyed a lot of West Ham supporters.
Wilson has just one more obstacle to overcome before joining West Ham, according to Hammers News, which was announced overnight.
Wilson will become Graham Potter’s third summer transfer window acquisition if that problem is fixed.
It’s still unclear how much Kyle Macaulay, the Hammers’ manager or head of recruitment, was involved in the transaction.
West Ham on the verge of making controversial third signing
Wilson is prone to injuries and will be 34 next season. His arrival would go against Potter’s declared transfer
objective, which is to significantly lower the age of the oldest team in the Premier League.
Potter didn’t want to recruit any new strikers, according to a prominent West Ham board spokesperson.
Given West Ham’s lack of options and pace up forward, that is a very concerning position on the manager’s part.
Given how competitive the Premier League will be, it makes sense that David Sullivan, in his capacity as de facto
director of football, would try to hire a striker.
Few think ageing Wilson is the way to go, though. And the fact he is a client of Sullivan’s preferred agent Will
Salthouse is not lost on supporters either.

The former forward for England and Bournemouth has more goals against West Ham than any other team.
Wilson has scored 13 goals against the east Londoners this season, which is a respectable total just against the Hammers.
One of those was scored for Bournemouth with his hand; he called it a “touch of magic,” which infuriated the fans.
However, it’s not the worst thing he’s said about West Ham.
Wilson, who is currently joining West Ham, once made fun of the team’s lone significant accomplishment in forty-five years.
Wilson mocked West Ham winning the Conference League
Hammers fans have had to suffer the ignominy of selling Declan Rice to London rivals Arsenal for the last
two years.
West Ham are incessantly goaded by the Gunners over snatching away the homegrown captain.
Now the supporters face a similar situation with Mohammed Kudus joining bitter rivals Spurs.
The Ghanaian is already proving that West Ham made a mistake in selling him to Tottenham, where
many people worry that Thomas Frank would cause him to blow up.
Meanwhile, West Ham’s main desire is to recruit a striker who will shortly turn 34 and has more injuries
than goals against them.
And someone who disparaged the Hammers’ last noteworthy triumph in almost fifty years.
In 2023, West Ham won the Europa Conference League, their first major title in forty-three years.
Imminent Hammers signing belittled Conference League
As a result, the Hammers were eligible to play in the next season’s Europa League.
In order to finish fourth and qualify for the Champions League at the time, Newcastle United went one
step further and broke the so-called “big six” hegemony.
While West Ham has had 12 European campaigns, Newcastle will play in Europe for the 18th time in
their history next season. However, if English teams hadn’t been banned for five years between 1985 and 1990, there would have been more.
The Hammers won the Intertoto Cup in 1999, and the Magpies did the same in 2006.
Unlike Newcastle, though, the Hammers have two major European trophies to their name having won the
European Cup Winners Cup in 1965 and that unforgettable Europa Conference League against Fiorentina
in Prague.
However, Wilson informed friend and in-limbo Hammers star Michael Antonio on the Footballer’s
Football Podcast back in 2023 that he did not rate the accomplishment.
As the two got into a heated argument, Wilson cruelly made fun of West Ham’s accomplishment by
jokingly asking how significant it is and drawing a comparison to winning something on FIFA.
“Michy You’re probably never going to have the opportunity to play in the Champions League, so I’ll tell
you what it’s like! Wilson made a joke.
“Where was it you played last year? Majorca? Magaluf?
“Oi come on man (don’t give me that),” Wilson said when Antonio pointed out he has a European trophy.
“I’ve got a European trophy on FIFA as well, it’s the same thing!”
Wilson also ridiculed the fact West Ham were in a Europa League group with the likes of Serbian
minnows Topola and German side Freiburg while Newcastle were, unsuccessfully, taking on Milan, PSG
and Borussia Dortmund.
In fairness Wilson did offer an olive branch later in the podcast, saying: “I don’t want to be too harsh on
West Ham, because it’s only Michail I don’t like, not the West Ham fans!”
Wilson has praised West Ham too
It must be pointed out the comments were just football banter between two friends.
But many Hammers fans are angry the club would go out and sign him for a host of reasons, not only his
past comments.
Wilson later defended the striker by calling West Ham a team “everyone wants to play for” in a
conversation with Antonio.
There is only one possible outcome given that the deal is almost finalised.
As with any player who dons the claret and blue, Wilson will have the support of the majority of West
Ham supporters if he signs.
And scoring goals and establishing himself as a wise free-transfer signing are the only ways the 33-year-
old can restore harmony.
