After clawing their way back to the top of the league, City needed only to defeat relegation-threatened QPR to win their first title since 1968.

Despite heavy investment, City remained stubbornly addicted to self-destruction. Although they led in the first half, Djibril Cisse and Jamie Mackie’s goals in the second half secured Manchester United’s title.

The home fans at the Etihad Stadium couldn’t believe what they were witnessing. As the clock approached injury time, tears were shed, seats were kicked, and scores of fans left the stadium frustrated.

What followed was the best end to any Premier League season. Eden Dzeko, a substitute, equalised before another City striker sealed the title in the 94th minute.
