Cardiff City, Doncaster, Port Vale: League One ups and downs
On the penultimate matchday, four teams secured their spots in new divisions, while Reading and Leyton Orient compete for the final play-off spot on Saturday.
After their 0-0 draw with West Bromwich Albion, Cardiff City will be moving down from the Championship to League One for the first time in more than 20 years.
In the preseason, the Bluebirds, who had former Royals Andy Rinomhota and Yakou Meite in their playing lineup and Chris Gunter as their coach, defeated Reading by a slim margin of 1-0.
Two managers have now been fired, and starting in August, the Welsh team will play in the third division.
Unless there is a 14-goal swing on the last day, Plymouth Argyle will almost certainly join them.
Although Luton Town, Preston North End, Derby County, and Stoke City are still mathematically vulnerable, Ruben Selles’ Hull City holds the final position going into the final day.
On Saturday, Doncaster Rovers and Port Vale were promoted from League Two.
After being demoted last year, Darren Moore’s Valliants make a comeback on their first try. They are renowned for forging close bonds with Royals supporters following the match’s abandonment in January 2024 and for donating to a statue of John Rudge at Vale Park.
Doncaster hasn’t faced Reading since their Championship relegation in 2014, and they last participated in League One in 2022.
Notts County, Walsall, and Bradford City are all fighting for the final automatic promotion spot, but anyone who finishes 11th, including Colchester United, can advance to the playoffs.
