Celtic ‘agree deal’ for two blockbuster friendlies as Brendan Rodgers sees pre-season schedule take shape

The Hoops are preparing for the defence of their Premiership title, as well as the Champions League qualifying rounds.

Celtic will reportedly prepare for next season by competing in an Italian summer tournament against Como and Ajax.

Brendan Rodgers’ side is already scheduled to face Cork City in Ireland on Tuesday, July 8, before departing for a training camp in Portugal a few days later.

The Premiership champions will then host Newcastle at Parkhead on Saturday 19, giving them the opportunity to face Champions League opponents ahead of their play-off to advance to the new group stage at the end of August.

According to Sun Sport, the Hoops will also face Serie A powerhouses Como and Eredivisie titans Ajax in late July.

They report that Como, managed by former Arsenal, Barcelona, and Spain star Cesc Fabregas, will hold a tournament in the gorgeous Italian city.

They further state that Ajax will participate in the competition due to their tight partnership with the Serie A club, and that an agreement has been reached to have Celtic face the two on July 24 and 26.

Rodgers’ team will then begin the defence of their Premiership championship the following weekend, August 2/3.

Ajax appeared destined to win their first Dutch title in three years earlier this month, only to lose it to rivals PSV Eindhoven on the final day of the season due to a dramatic collapse.

The Amsterdam club has now parted ways with manager Francesco Farioli and is thought to be interested in bringing Liverpool first-team coach Johnny Heitinga back to the club.

Heitinga, a former defender, began his playing career with Ajax and briefly served as interim manager of the first team in the second half of 2022/23.
