Celtic on alert as surprise Serie A move considered

Arne Engels, a Celtic midfielder, is once again attracting serious interest from Serie A, with Atalanta allegedly renewing their chase of the Belgian playmaker following his debut season in Glasgow.

Engels, who joined Celtic from Augsburg last summer for a reputed club record £11 million, has received a lot of criticism in the last year; nonetheless, the Serie A team evidently rates him highly. The 21-year-old has had a solid season, tallying 10 goals and 13 assists in 52 games and establishing himself as a regular starter under Brendan Rodgers.

Atalanta had previously been linked with Engels, and their renewed interest coincides with mounting doubt about the future of their Brazilian player Éderson. The Serie A club is apparently braced for proposals from several European heavyweights, with Liverpool, Manchester United, and Manchester City all supposedly preparing offers worth more than €50 million.

Juventus, as well as other Premier League clubs such as Arsenal, Tottenham, and Newcastle, are keeping a careful eye on Éderson’s position. The predicted profit from an Éderson sale might greatly increase Atalanta’s financial firepower, and Engels is thought to be a prospective successor.

Celtic, on the other hand, are in a strong negotiation position and would expect a fee much over £20 million for the club’s most costly signing to date.

Given Engels’ age, output, and potential, the Celtic hierarchy has little incentive to sell. But if Atalanta sells Éderson, the Italian club may test Celtic’s commitment with a hefty bid.

With a contract that runs until 2028, any agreement would have to be based on the Hoops’ conditions. The coming weeks might be exciting, especially if the Premier League giants start a bidding war for Atalanta’s Brazilian midfielder.
