Championship boss decides to quit days after season ends with multiple job offers lined up

Danny Rohl has decided to leave Sheffield Wednesday, talkSPORT understands.

Southampton’s major managerial goal is Owls manager Rohl, but there is also interest from Germany and Saudi Arabia.
Rohl’s Wednesday deal is thought to include a release clause worth roughly £5 million.

The German’s contract is currently two years long, having been extended in May of last year.

Rohl has won 34 of his 89 matches as Hillsborough manager since his hiring in October 2023.

The 35-year-old has subsequently become a popular figure among Owls fans.

After leading the team to Championship survival last season, his first full season resulted in a top half finish.

Wednesday finished 12th following a 1-1 draw at Watford on the last day of the season on Saturday.

Following the game, Rohl told BBC Radio Sheffield: “I think after the game today, I had a vision of my last 560 days at this club to look in their eyes. The way they [the fans] call my name is always unique.

“The fans are the heartbeat of this team, and they are constantly present. I’ve never had a negative experience with these fans; they’re always positive.

“We don’t know what will happen in the next few days.” I know what I want to do; my picture is clear, but it is also part of the club’s decision-making process.

“I won’t forget this place.” It does not matter what happens today. “To have such a relationship so quickly, with such a belief, hope, and respectful togetherness.” I could not have predicted this when I took over. “It will be from the bottom of my heart.”

Rohl has had to deal with off-field concerns at Hillsborough throughout his tenure.

The EFL has placed the team under a transfer embargo several times in the last two seasons.

Meanwhile, owner Dejphon Chansiri failed to pay the players on schedule in March due to a ‘temporary issue’ with financial flow.

Southampton had considered signing Rohl in December before replacing Russell Martin with Ivan Juric.

The Saints are now looking for a new manager after sacking Juric following last month’s relegation.
Rohl is a familiar face at St. Mary’s having serving as Ralph Hassenhuttl’s assistant coach for eight months in 2018-19.

Since Juric’s departure, Simon Rusk has served as interim manager of the top-flight’s worst team.

Southampton have three games left to avoid matching the Premier League’s lowest point total in history.

After 35 matches, they are even with Derby’s record low of 11 points from 2007/08.
