Norway manager has told Luton Town star man Thelo Aasgaard he shouldn’t play in League One

Luton Town star Thelo Aasgaard has been advised to leave the club by Norway manager Stale Solbakken.

The 23-year-old midfielder is in a group of stand-out players from the three relegated clubs who will be on the radar of Championship clubs this summer. Even if finances aren’t particularly pressing for Luton after their recent year in the Premier League it doesn’t mean that they will be able to keep everyone happy.

Aasgaard only joined from Wigan Athletic in January for a fee of about £3 million, too much at that time to compete for the likes of Stoke City and Blackburn Rovers, who were also linked.

But his immediate international future is at stake if he goes back to play in League One.

Solbakken told NTB in Norway: “It was a calculated risk. Luton were in a difficult situation when Thelo changed clubs, but it goes without saying that it is difficult to play for the national team if you play in League One.

“There are many leagues he can play in. He is a versatile midfielder with good qualities both offensively and defensively.”

Aasgaard was a central figure as Luton found superb form in the last couple of months of the season, albeit too late to stay up, although it did go down to the last day.

Matt Bloomfield told  recently: “Thelo’s top, he’s got top quality in my mind, there’s no doubt. He’s been fantastic in training, he’s got goals in his feet, he can use both feet, can go both ways. I think we saw glimpses in his early games and maybe that’s dialled down slightly in his last couple of games, but he’s really done his defensive work diligently as well.

“Thelo has been fantastic for us, he’s been a real good investment for our football club, I believe he’s going to go on and have a top career. He’s going to be a top player, I’ve said it for a number of years in League One that he can make the step up.
