Charlton Athletic ‘Beaten off rival bids’ to snap up Championship star

According to journalist Alan Nixon, Charlton Athletic have ‘beaten off rival bids’ for Blackburn Rovers player Joe Rankin-Costello as they prepare to relocate him to the Valley.

Nathan Jones has accelerated his squad expansion in recent weeks, bringing in goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski from Luton Town, as well as Amari’i Bell and, most recently, Reece Burke from the same club.

Tanto Olaofe has signed as another offensive option, and Sonny Carey has improved the midfield. Jones is currently looking for a player at another Championship team and has set his sights on Blackburn Rovers.

Charlton are looking to sign Rankin-Costello, with a £750,000 bid on the table for the versatile star.

Charlton ‘have beaten off rival approaches’ for the Blackburn man, who can play in a variety of positions but is most comfortable at right-back or midfield.

Blackburn are happy to cash in on Rankin-Costello, who has fallen out of favour under manager Valerien Ismael.

Charlton will be recruiting someone with plenty of Championship experience, as the 25-year-old has over 100 games in the second tier.

He progressed through the Blackburn Rovers development system after spending time at Manchester United.

Rankin-Costello will be looking for a change of scenery after just playing for Rovers in his career so far.

If the transfer is approved, he will be hoping to make a good impression on Charlton manager Jones during pre-season.

Blackburn are scheduled to visit the Valley in the Championship at the end of September, which might pit Rankin-Costello against his previous club.

The Addicks’ visit to Ewood Park is set for early January.
