According to The Star’s Alex Miller, Charlton Athletic are ‘unlikely’ to sign Akin Famewo right now.

Charlton Athletic has been linked with a move for the defender this summer. CAFC are prepared for life back in the Championship after being promoted from League One.

Famewo, 26, left Sheffield Wednesday at the end of his contract. His contract expired at the end of last month, and he is currently considering his options as a free agent.

In the most recent update on his position, journalist Miller wrote on X: “He departed Wednesday, as I understand it. Gather Charlton seems improbable as things stand, but I can’t say with certainty where he’ll end up.

The Addicks extended Nathan Jones’ contract last month. At the time, he told their website, “I’m very proud and delighted.” I still had three years remaining, but the club approaching me and wanting to continue that journey meant a lot to me since it is a club that I like. We’ve just accomplished one important step, but there’s still a long way to go to attain our goals, and I’m delighted I’ll keep working toward them.”

Charlton Athletic’s latest on Akin Famewo

Charlton Athletic will already be familiar with Famewo. He has already spent two loan spells at CAFC.

The Londoner began his career with Luton Town and was loaned to Grimsby Town as a youngster to gain experience. Norwich City came knocking in 2019 and signed him on a permanent basis.

Famewo made one first-team appearance during his time at Carrow Road. He was loaned out to The Valley twice and appeared in 62 Addicks games in total, as well as a stay with St Mirren in Scotland.

Sheffield Wednesday swooped for him in 2022. He went on to play 73 games for the Yorkshire club before his recent exit.

What next for Charlton Athletic?

Charlton Athletic has recently been quite busy with recruitment. CAFC will hope they are prepared for the promotion to the second tier.

They may need to start exploring for alternatives to Famewo, though. He has a significant decision to make about where he wants to go after Sheffield Wednesday.

The Addicks have entered the market to add players such as Thomas Kaminski, Isaac Olaofe, and Reece Burke to their roster, among others. They have the opportunity to complete more agreements in the coming weeks.
