The Southampton deal was a “panic signing,” and Charlton Athletic was urged to buy a Japanese player in January.

Following their promotion the previous season, Charlton Athletic is looking to consolidate, and they had a very busy first summer transfer window back in the Championship. Following May’s victory over Leyton Orient in the League One play-off final at Wembley Stadium, the Addicks made a number of low-budget acquisitions to maintain their divisional standing as the team returned to the second division for the first time in five years under Nathan Jones.
In the midst of a respectable start to the season, which has seen the team pick up four points from as many games—including an opening-day victory over Watford at The Valley and a goalless draw at Bristol City on August 16—Jones was able to assemble players who strengthen his squad in all the defensive, midfield, and attacking departments. In an attempt to add more depth and quality, Charlton, predictably, remained busy until the very end of the summer window, which closed on September 1 at 7 p.m. Though the window is officially closed for four months until New Year’s Day, SE7 fans have already examined areas where the team may have been improved, just like every other fandom.
With the arrival of Thomas Kaminski, Joe Rankin-Costello, Reece Burke, Amari’i Bell, and James Bree, half of the Addicks’ summer additions strengthened one of League One’s most resilient defences. The latter of those, Bree, was also the team’s last loan signing of the summer. She came from Southampton, a team in the Championship, and reunited with Jones, who had slipped in the hierarchy at St Mary’s under the new manager Will Still. The 27-year-old, however, signed a short-term contract that originally only lasts until January, so it’s possible he won’t stay in South London for the season.
After Kyoto Sanga rejected a loan offer with a buyout option in July, Emma Harknett, a Charlton fan commentator on Football League World, thinks the team should revive their interest in Japanese full-back Shinnosuke Fukuda, who can play as a right-wing or right-back in January. “In the summer transfer window, what went wrong? It’s not signing a full-back, in my opinion,” Harknett told FLW.
However, James Bree is now our only player on loan from Southampton till January. “We lost Thierry Small (to Preston North End) and we didn’t really replace him,” she said. “We use Rob Apter at wing-back, I know. However, I don’t believe we have many backups at full-back in case Apter is hurt. Since we only have Bree until January, I believe this is a panic indication. As I mentioned earlier, we ought to have pursued Fukuda, whom I think we attempted to sign but Kyoto Sanga demanded higher compensation.
“The only thing I can see is that we’ve got Bree until January, then we try to go back in for Fukuda,” Harknett stated. That’s what we’ll be doing, hopefully. “Full-back, wing-back was probably the one area we did get wrong, and it would’ve been more of a priority signing (for me.)”
