Charlton Athletic warned over 7-figure Stockport County swoop – it could end up like flop Ipswich Town transfer.

This post is part of Football League World’s ‘Terrace Talk’ series, which features unique perspectives from our FLW Fan Pundits on the most recent breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings, and more… Charlton Athletic are close to signing Stockport County striker Isaac Olaofe.
According to Alan Nixon on Patreon, the Addicks are prepared to spend £1.5 million for the 25-year-old and are currently discussing personal terms with the player.
The Hatters have apparently “resigned” to losing the striker, who has 37 goals in three years at Edgeley Park, and he is now poised to move to the Championship, where he has only two previous appearances for Millwall.
Charlton Athletic questioned over Isaac Olaofe transfer
Sam White, a Charlon Athletic fan pundit for Football League World, has questioned the substantial sum of money that manager Nathan Jones and the transfer team intend to spend on Olaofe, drawing parallels to the deal that brought Ipswich Town’s Gassan Ahadme to The Valley last summer. “£1.5 million seems way too much money for someone that scores one goal every four games,” Sam told Football Weekly.
“However, I believe he is young and adaptable enough to be good.
“But working under Nathan Jones, playing for Charlton, and carrying such a high price tag will put a lot of pressure on him. “That’s what occurred with Gassan Ahadme, and it simply didn’t work out. He has not lived up to the cost or the pressure. So I’m not sure if Olaofe will do that, which would be a major issue, especially if Charlton were in relegation trouble.
| Isaac Olaofe in League Two (2023/24) as per WhoScored | |
|---|---|
| Start (Sub) | 34 (9) |
| Goals | 20 |
| Assists | 2 |
| Shots per 90 | 1.6 |
| Dribbles per 90 | 0.7 |
| Pass success rate | 69.6% |
“You do not want to be under so much strain. “Having said that, if anyone’s going to do it, someone like Olaofe, who’s eager for growth, wants to go up the leagues, and has something about him, you’d think he’d go for it and work well with Matty Godden.
“It’s probably not going to be £1.5 million up front, with some add-ons and stuff like that, which probably actually works out quite well, but I wouldn’t want us to set our stall out on paying such big money for Olaofe when there’s money needing to be spent in midfield a bit more and on some wingers.”
Signing Isaac Olaofe would come with significant risk for Charlton Athletic & Nathan Jones
Charlton is now a Championship team, thus they must sign players capable of competing at that level. Second-tier experience is critical for staying in the division, and the Addicks cannot afford to spend a large sum on a forward who may fail to deliver.
Olaofe has experience in the lower leagues, becoming the first Stockport County player to record 20 league goals in over two decades. However, he lacks championship experience.
If Jones has identified the 25-year-old as a striker he wants to add to his front line this summer, he must be trusted, although there is currently some danger surrounding the transaction.
