Mike Jones’ future at Chesterfield is still up in the air.
The well-liked midfielder, who turns 38 in August, has been with Chesterfield for three years and won the National League title in 2024. However, he only made five appearances last season, three of which were starts in the EFL Trophy, and he only played 16 minutes before undergoing surgery for an achilles injury that kept him out for the remainder of the season. During his recovery, he helped the backroom staff with conditioning and fitness.
Jones, who impressed during his trial and secured a contract with the club in the summer of 2022, is currently out of contract but was not listed in any of the categories when the club released its retained list last month.
Before deciding on his future course of action, he will now observe how the preseason goes. All options remain, including signing a new contract or joining the backroom staff in some way.
Chesterfield is lacking in central midfield, which is the position where they need to add the most players this summer, as a result of the exits of Darren Oldaker and Ollie Banks as well as the termination of Jenson Metcalfe’s loan.
Over the years, the supporters have admired Jones’ tenacious and full-blooded efforts, and he has made over 60 appearances for the Spireites. He will play senior football for the 19th time this season, having previously played for Sheffield Wednesday, Bury, Carlisle United, and Tranmere Rovers.
