Chris Davies has one significant Birmingham City concern ahead of 2025/26, Eiran Cashin is not the answer

Chris Davies has one significant Birmingham City concern ahead of 2025/26, Eiran Cashin is not the answer.

Birmingham City have been one of the most exciting promoted teams in the Championship for quite some time.

Blues are quickly emerging as a genuine top six contender in the second tier, thanks to owner Tom Wagner’s strong support this summer.

Tommy Doyle has already discussed promotion, but Chris Davies will not want his players to get ahead of themselves, despite some impressive signings in recent weeks, including Kyogo Furuhashi.

Nonetheless, the loan signing of Eiran Cashin from Brighton & Hove Albion represents a statement of intent from Birmingham.

However, one issue will continue to cause concern at St. Andrew’s.

Chris Davies casts doubts on Eiran Cashin playing at left-back for Birmingham City.

Cashin has spent the majority of his career with Derby County, but he left the Rams in January to join Brighton, where he has struggled to establish himself in the Premier League.

However, he is a very capable centre-back, and because he is left-footed, he has an advantage over some of his teammates. However, Birmingham are short on depth at left-back, with Lee Buchanan still injured and Alex Cochrane taking full responsibility for the position.

However, Davies is unsure whether Cashin can play left-back as cover. He stated (via Birmingham Live): “Lee is quite a few months away.

You could see at the end (of the Port Vale friendly) that I was concerned about Alex getting injured, so yes, we do need another left-back. “I believe he [Eiran Cashin] can do it.

I haven’t included him as an option. I think that would be a last resort because he hasn’t done much of it.

He’s a centre back. Despite his height of just under six feet, I believe he jumps higher than anyone in our squad, which is why he wins all or most of his headers.

“You can read a bit into his height but he will always compete well in the air. He’s strong on the ball and has a good left foot. What I want from the centre-backs is that they defend first and are strong physically.”

Eiran Cashin should not be played at left-back

While it may appear that Cashin is a natural fit for left-back, the 23-year-old has only appeared in a handful of games in that position.

The ex-Derby ace lacks pace and would struggle to contain opposing wingers if they could get past him on that side, and his ability to get forward into attacking positions is not his strong suit.

Cashin is an old-school centre-back who should not be pushed outside of his comfort zone if Birmingham wants to get the most out of their loanee.

Brighton will also be disappointed if Davies forces the Republic of Ireland international hopeful out wide, and the Blues may struggle to develop his game at full-back.
