Chris Rigg speaks out after agreeing to a new, long-term deal with Sunderland: “One ambition”

Chris Rigg, a young player for Sunderland, has agreed to a new long-term deal with the Black Cats and says he has always had one goal: to sign a new contract. After making his first appearance in the first squad at the age of 15, the 18-year-old has inked a new contract to continue at the Stadium of Light until the summer of 2030.
As a young player, Newcastle United took notice of the Black Cats midfielder, and Manchester United and Everton were also big fans. This summer, there were rumours that the latter of the three might make a move for the England young player, but his new contract ends such rumours. The Academy of Light graduate has now made 74 senior appearances in red and white, making him the youngest outfield début and goal scorer in Sunderland’s history.
Signing this new contract feels fantastic,” Rigg remarked. “Assigning a long-term contract here was my primary goal in life. “I’m ecstatic because I enjoy playing here and being here every day, and it’s been an amazing experience since I made my debut at the age of 15. It seems like yesterday that I made my Championship debut, and just a few weeks ago, I made my Premier League debut. The last two years have gone by so quickly.
I couldn’t have asked for more, and it feels unreal. I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who has supported me, and I’m honoured to be a member of this club and team.” With 45 appearances in the Sky Bet Championship and the Championship Apprentice of the Year award, Rigg was instrumental in Sunderland’s promotion-winning campaign the previous season. He was named the 2024 North East Sports Writers’ Young Player of the Year and the Championship Goal of the Month for September 2024, respectively, the year before.
“We are thrilled that Chris has committed his future to Sunderland,” Kristjaan Speakman continued. We are thrilled with his development from the academy to our senior group, and he played a key role in our victory the previous season. “For a young player, Chris’s achievements to far are exceptional, but like the Club, he is focused on the future and we think he will play a significant role in it. The fact that our academy and staff have grown, advanced, and now kept excellent talent—a crucial component of our strategy and culture—makes this another wonderful moment.
