It’s been over a week since Sheffield United suffered another play-off defeat, and now that the aftermath of that terrible day in May has passed, the club must focus on the future.
Tommy Watson’s 95th-minute winner at Wembley secured Sunderland’s return to the Premier League after an eight-year absence, and Chris Wilder could only watch as the Wearsiders celebrated.
However, with a new month ahead of them and the transfer window fully open, the South Yorkshire club must push forward and bring in the new faces required to contend for an automatic promotion spot in 2025/26.

Sheffield United are already looking for defenders, with Jimmy Dunne and Chris Mepham on their radar, but they also want a new forward, and Wilder is tracking a former favourite. However, they must avoid the manoeuvre.
Sheffield United have expressed interest in Oli McBurnie.
The Blades’ forwards did not have the best of seasons, with Tyrese Campbell finishing the season as the top scorer with 11 goals in all competitions, therefore it is not surprising that Oli McBurnie has been connected with a return to Bramall Lane.
On Sunday, Alan Nixon revealed that Sheffield United is one of three Championship clubs interested in the striker, who presently plays for Las Palmas in Spain.
Hull City and Swansea City are both interested in bringing McBurnie back to England, but Celta Vigo is aiming to keep the 28-year-old (who will turn 29 on June 4) in La Liga.
With the Spanish club in the Europa League next season, they will be in a strong position to recruit the Scotland international, and the Blades must avoid a transfer struggle.
However, the soon-to-be 29-year-old has never been particularly prolific for the Blades, and without a leader in that forward position, as they had when Billy Sharp was at Bramall Lane, McBurnie’s inconsistency in front of goal is likely to persist.
He only scored three goals in 34 La Liga games for Las Palmas this season, and Sheffield United must sign a player with confidence in the final third in the summer, since building it up with a man who lacks it will take time.
