City announce released list as three players to depart

This afternoon, the Canaries made their contract decisions public. Longtime winger Onel Hernandez and midfielder Jacob Sorensen are also expected to leave the team following this weekend’s Championship season finale against Cardiff.

Despite firing head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup last week, who was involved in those decisions, Norwich has confirmed those judgments.

After five seasons and two stints with his boyhood club, 29-year-old Gunn will leave City. The Scottish international has made 170 appearances throughout that time, with 46 clean sheets across all competitions.

Gunn, the son of City great Bryan, will be looking for a new chapter this summer after negotiations over a new contract failed to materialize despite being City’s number one. After unseating Tim Krul, he became the team’s number one during his permanent stay at Carrow Road and became a Scotland international.

Hernandez will leave Carrow Road this summer after eight years with the team, which included two Championship title victories in 2018–19 and 2020–21. He is only surpassed by Kenny McLean as the player with the longest tenure.

He joined City from Eintracht Braunschweig of the German second tier in January 2018 and has since made 209 appearances for the Canaries, scoring 15 goals and dishing out 26 assists.

The last frontline player to be let go at the end of this season is Sorensen, who joined Norwich in 2020.

The Dane, who has made 108 appearances in his five seasons with the Canaries, has struggled with injuries and availability throughout his career. Sorensen played a key role as a substitute left-back for Daniel Farke’s team that won the second Championship title.

On Saturday, May 3, when City plays Cardiff in the Championship campaign finale, fans will have the chance to bid those players farewell.

Jonathan Tomkinson, who spent the second half of this season on loan at Ross County after playing three senior games for Norwich, and goalkeeper Archie Mair will also depart the team when their contracts expire.

“Angus, Onel, and Jacob have all played a significant part in our club’s history,” stated Sporting director Ben Knapper. Their accomplishments here have been outstanding, and they have been a member of some extremely successful teams.

“This weekend, when we play Cardiff City in our final game of the season, I hope our fans will join me in expressing our gratitude to each player for their efforts and services to the team.

“We all hope they have the best possible future in their various fields. All of them are welcome to return to Carrow Road in the future.

Contract extension provisions and development departures will be announced when the time comes.
