According to reports, Derby County was on the verge of signing United States international Patrick Agyemang from Charlotte FC, but Ipswich Town is also rumoured to be competitive.
In just nine games for the US national team, the 24-year-old attacker has scored five goals. He has also established himself as a reliable goal scorer in Major League Soccer (MLS).
According to reports, he was very close to joining the Rams at Pride Park, which would have been a true transfer coup.
One of Derby’s divisional opponents, though, has recently surfaced as a contender and has the financial means to outmuscle County if they so choose.
In the hunt to sign Patrick Agyemang, Ipswich Town joins Derby County.
Early on Wednesday morning, journalist Fabrizio Romano announced on his X account that Derby was “closing in” on a deal for Agyemang, a striker for Charlotte FC.
He went on to say that while Agyemang was still with the United States at the Gold Cup, he had already given the move the “green light,” and that negotiations between the clubs were already in progress.
If he made the move, the attacker would become County’s first summer acquisition. The Rams are trying to replace the many players who left the team at the end of the previous campaign, and Carlton Morris of Luton Town is also rumoured to be joining the team as a statement of intent.
Ipswich Town has presented a surprise, though, as Tom Bogert of GIVEMESPORT’s USA correspondent claims that a deal between Derby and Agyemang isn’t as near as it was thought to be, and the Tractor Boys are still in the mix to sign the 24-year-old.
Town is searching for new striker reinforcements after losing Liam Delap to Chelsea earlier this summer in a £30 million move. They are interested in Agyemang’s talents, which gives Derby a big problem as they try to close a deal.
The presence of Ipswich Town may now make it difficult for Derby County to sign Patrick Agyemang.
Despite missing just two games because of his engagement in the USA, Agyemang has scored six goals in 16 MLS appearances thus far this 2025 season. Several teams have allegedly expressed interest in him this summer.
He scored goals against Haiti and Trinidad & Tobago in the most recent round of Gold Cup matches, and he appears to be one of Mauricio Pochettino‘s top offensive players.
With four goals in his previous four games for Charlotte, managed by Dean Smith, the 24-year-old is also playing brilliantly at the club level, so it’s no wonder that English teams are keeping an eye on him.
After playing for Crown Legacy FC, Charlotte‘s reserve team, in the third division of American football in 2023, Agyemang scored ten goals in the MLS last season. Since then, he has established himself as a mainstay at the top level under former Norwich City and Aston Villa manager Smith.

However, if Agyemang does depart Charlotte this summer, it is not a certain that County will be the team to sign him. In addition to Ipswich, Belgian team Genk is reportedly interested in acquiring the striker, according to GIVEMESPORT.
Although Derby’s mission has been made more difficult, the Connecticut-born forward appears to be in the midst of a transfer drama while participating in a major international tournament. It is impossible to predict which direction he will go at this time.
