Following Ellis Simms’ dismal second season, which ended with manager Frank Lampard excluding the team from the playoffs, Coventry City should give serious consideration to cashing in on him this summer.
The former Everton forward joined the Sky Blues in 2023 for an estimated £8 million, but he was totally ignored as they lost to Sunderland in the playoff semifinals.
Simms, who has only scored six goals in 43 league games this season, hasn’t exactly lived up to the high asking price. At 24, he might still be able to fetch a return sum that would enable Lampard to bring in one of his options.
Frank Lampard’s elimination from the playoffs says a lot about Simms’ future at Coventry.

Ellis Simms’ future at the team is seriously in doubt after Frank Lampard decided not to give him a single minute throughout the two legs of the team’s loss to Sunderland in the playoff semi-final.
One could argue that Simms, who is 6′ 3″, would have at least engaged Dan Ballard in some aerial combat and may have lamented Haji Wright’s lost head-on opportunity.
Lampard has a history of benching attackers throughout the playoffs. In the 2019 Derby County manager’s playoff final against Aston Villa, he benched both Jack Marriott and Martyn Waghorn in favor of Mason Bennett, a winger who scored four goals during his nine years at the club.
Being totally ignored in the team’s two most important games of the season, however, for a man who was brought in to replace Viktor Gyokeres, suggests Lampard does not see Simms as a long-term player.
After a strong debut season, Simms has battled with consistency.
Ellis Simms had a really good first season with Coventry, netting 19 goals across all competitions in 2023–2024. However, his second season has been a bit of a disappointment, as he has only managed six goals in 43 league games.
Simms’ tenure at Coventry appears to have been characterized by a pattern of inconsistency. Yes, he had a successful debut season, but he scored goals in spurts rather than steadily. By the start of the year, he had just three.

Simms only scored two goals in his first 24 Championship games this past season, and both came in the same game—a brace against QPR in September.
Lampard scored four goals in six games during his short purple streak when he first arrived, but it turned out to be another false dawn rather than a turning moment.
This summer, reducing losses could be advantageous for everyone.

Simms hasn’t finished two entire seasons at the CBS Arena, and it’s starting to look like he might not be the solution the Sky Blues need under Frank Lampard.
His prior success elsewhere, when moved out on loan by Everton, supports the idea that, at 24, he still has potential resale value. He scored seven goals in 17 games during the first part of the 2022–2023 season while playing for their semi-final rivals, Sunderland.
Cashing in now would provide Coventry and Lampard the money and squad space they need to sign a forward that Lampard is interested in playing. The Chelsea legend clearly does not like him, as evidenced by the playoff snub and the depreciation of an £8 million asset sitting on the bench.
