Coventry City transfer dilemma issued over £3.5m player – he’s been “nowhere near good enough

After losing out on promotion to the Premier League under Frank Lampard last season, Coventry City is going to

have a busy summer.

Despite finishing in fifth place in the table, the Sky Blues advanced to the play-offs but lost to eventual promotion

winners Sunderland in the semi-finals.

The club faces a choice in the summer transfer market: should they continue with the team that came so close to the

Premier League, or should they break it up and try again with a number of new players?

The amount of interest the club obtains in its own players might also determine a lot of business and greatly impact

this year’s incomings.

Ellis Simms’ Coventry future addressed after indifferent 2024-25 season

Given that Simms has two years remaining on his current contract, FLW’s Coventry fan commentator stated that he

has been too inconsistent in his second season at the CBS Arena when asked about his immediate future with the

team.

He does, however, think he is valuable to the squad and that, if given the option, he would pick the 24-year-old above

his strike partner Haji Wright, even if the American scored more goals.

“Isn’t Ellis Simms a strange guy?” Football League World was informed by Deez.“He had a great first season

alongside Haji Wright, and then second season obviously not great, not great under [Mark] Robins for the first half

of it and then Lampard comes in and still nothing from the lad.

“He works fairly hard and he creates space for the likes of [Jack] Rudoni behind by leading defenders away, so he’s a

very useful player.

Although he is a talented striker, his output is simply insufficient.

He may be fantastic when he’s on it, but when he’s not, he comes across as lazy and uninterested.

I have a lot more time for Simms than for Haji Wright, but I don’t think we’ll be selling Wright for the next month or so because of his injury.

“I firmly believe that we should retain Simms if Lampard can bring out the best in him, like we did in his debut season.

However, I believe we missed him during the playoffs; I would have definitely had him on the pitch.

“I would probably say to sell Simms or Haji, not both.

“I think we absolutely need to keep one of them – my preference would be to sell Haji, but it’s looking unlikely.”

Simms was a valuable member of the team under Lampard, even though his goal return from the previous campaign

wasn’t as impressive as anyone associated with the team would have hoped.

Coventry could be better off keeping him and hoping that his goal-scoring ability improves over the course of the

upcoming season unless a good offer comes in.

If interest is exhibited elsewhere this summer, Coventry should aim to at least turn a profit in any agreement to sell

him, since the original fee to recruit him was reportedly £3.5 million.

This should be a quieter window for the club since they want to keep this team together for one more season,

especially considering how close they were to promotion last year.
