Craig Gordon awarded a Hearts testimonial against English opponents.

Sunderland will pay tribute to Scotland custodian Craig Gordon with a testimonial match at Tynecastle in July. Gordon has been with Heart of Midlothian for 11 years. At 42 years old, the experienced custodian is on his second term at Tynecastle Park and is the club’s number one. He will welcome old club Sunderland to Edinburgh on Saturday, July 26, for a friendly match that is guaranteed to be popular with fans. Gordon rose from the Hearts junior academy to make his senior debut in 2001, and he quickly established himself as the first-choice custodian. He was traded to Sunderland for £9 million in 2007, setting a British record for a custodian at the time. He spent six years at Celtic between 2014 and 2020 before returning to Hearts, the team he has supported since childhood.

Gordon is a member of the club’s Hall of Fame and won the 2006 Scottish Cup with them. He is also their most-capped Scotland internationalist and record European appearance holder. He currently holds 81 Scotland caps but is not in the squad for this week’s friendlies against Iceland and Liechtenstein as he recovers from a shoulder injury.

Both Gordon and Hearts are hopeful that he will be able to play in the testimonial game. “It’s a great honour to be granted a testimonial year with the club that I grew up supporting, the club that I have given my all for, and the club that I love,” the custodian told his club’s website. “Throughout my career, I’ve won trophies, played at the highest level, and represented my country, but what gives me the most pride is putting on that Hearts jersey and walking out in front of our fans.” To be able to share a testimonial year with our supporters is extremely meaningful to me.

Sunderland and EPL memories for Hearts and Scotland keeper

“It’s also particularly satisfying to look forward to welcoming Sunderland to Tynecastle.” I had several fantastic occasions at the Stadium of Light, and it holds a particular place in my heart. I’d want to thank everyone on my testimonial committee for their efforts, as well as the club, in putting together what I hope will be a fun testimonial year for our wonderful supporters. Without their support, I would not have been able to accomplish what I have in my profession, for which I am eternally thankful.”
