Crash on A133 Causes Heavy Traffic in Colchester

Motorists in Colchester are facing long delays following a crash on the A133, one of the town’s key arterial routes, which took place earlier today.

The incident occurred during the late morning on Sunday, April 28, causing significant disruption to traffic in both directions. Emergency services were called to the scene shortly after the collision was reported, and the road was partially closed while police and paramedics attended to those involved.

Although full details of the crash have not yet been released, it is understood that multiple vehicles were involved. Witnesses reported seeing at least two cars with visible damage, with one vehicle having spun out onto the central reservation. The extent of any injuries sustained is not yet known, though East of England Ambulance Service has confirmed that crews were dispatched and treatment was provided on the scene.

Traffic began to build quickly following the incident, with congestion stretching back towards the Greenstead and Hythe areas. Essex Travel News issued an alert on social media, warning drivers to avoid the area if possible. “A133 Colchester – reports of an accident causing heavy delays. Expect congestion and allow extra travel time,” read a post on X (formerly Twitter).

Commuters and residents took to social media to express their frustration, with many stuck in queues for more than half an hour. “Complete standstill on the A133 – hope everyone involved is okay,” wrote one user. Another posted, “Was meant to be a five-minute drive, now running late for everything.”

The A133 is a critical route connecting Colchester town centre to the A120 and the University of Essex, making it a heavily trafficked road, particularly on weekends and during term time. Sunday’s crash added pressure to an already busy network, especially with other roadworks currently in place across the town.

A spokesperson for Essex Police confirmed: “We were called to reports of a collision on the A133 in Colchester shortly after 11.30am on Sunday, April 28. Officers remain at the scene. Drivers are advised to find alternative routes while we continue our work.”

No arrests have been reported in connection with the incident, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation.

As of 3pm, traffic conditions had only slightly improved, with residual delays still being reported. Highways officers were seen directing traffic and clearing debris to help reopen lanes. Motorists are being urged to remain patient and check for live updates before starting their journeys.

The incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictability of road travel and the importance of caution, particularly on high-speed routes like the A133.

More updates will follow as information becomes available.
