‘Dangerous’ dog must wear muzzle after Chippenham park attack

A ‘dangerous’ dog must wear a muzzle after an attack at a Chippenham park.

On Monday (28 April), police officers rushed to John Coles Park after receiving complaints of a dog mauling another dog at 5.20pm.
An eyewitness told the Chippenham News & Notice Board that she was “humbled” by the number of individuals who came to help save the dog.

She described it as a “faith restored in humanity” moment, and said that they are “lovely people.”

It is thought that the attacking dog was an Italian mastiff, sometimes known as a Cane Corso. The victim dog was a black labrador.

Wiltshire Police said that officers were dispatched to the incident, where one individual was bitten on the hand while attempting to separate the animals.

“Both dogs had been separated by the time we arrived on the scene and the owner of the suspect dog was dealt with by means of a community resolution order, which was supported by the victim” , a police spokesperson stated.

Further reading: “This order requires the dog to wear a lead and muzzle at all times whilst in public spaces, the dog must only be walked by persons over the age of 18 and the dog’s owner must attend a Responsible Dog Owners Course.”

A representative for Chippenham Town Council stated, “We have recently received some concerning reports regarding the behaviour of dogs and their owners.”

“These include old persons getting knocked down by loose dogs, children being afraid while playing in the park, and leashed dogs being attacked by loose dogs.

“We are also aware of certain concerning instances that have resulted in verbal abuse while attempting to be resolved.

“We are devoted to providing safe, clean, and enjoyable facilities that are welcoming to all visitors at all of our locations.

“We need your support to ensure that our shared places are respected by following and adhering to certain simple regulations, which you can read in detail in our Dog Policy.

“In John Coles Park, there is a clearly marked off-leash and on-leash area for dogs.

“It is the dog owner’s obligation to maintain the safety and management of their dog. This applies to all Town Council parks, open spaces, and amenities, whether the dog is on or off the lead.

“We would appreciate your cooperation when exercising your dogs at our facilities to enable safe enjoyment for all users.”
