Danny Rohl takes significant action as Sheffield Wednesday saga edges closer to conclusion

Sheffield Wednesday has had a terrible summer thus far, and their predicament appears to be getting worse.

The Owls failed to pay their players in May, and some non-playing staff had to rely on emergency funds to get by during what has been a difficult few months.

The EFL imposed a three-window transfer embargo on the club, with the South Yorkshire club unable to pay fees for permanent or loan players until January 2027.

Leicester City are fans of manager Danny Rohl, and while the way the Foxes handled Ruud Van Nistelrooy’s dismissal was criticized, they are eager to bring in the German to replace the former Manchester United striker. In a recent update, they appear to be getting closer.

Danny Rohl notifies Sheffield Wednesday players that he is leaving.

Rohl’s resignation has felt like a matter of when, not if, during the previous six months, but the end of this drama appears to be just around the horizon.

According to the Daily Mail, the 36-year-old has informed the Sheffield Wednesday players that he will leave the club this summer, and it appears that Leicester will be his next destination.

The Foxes have conducted conversations with the Owls over a compensation deal for the German, with Rohl’s release clause reduced from £5 million to £1 million.

Finding a successor for Danny Rohl will be almost impossible.

Sheffield Wednesday’s on-field performance has improved significantly since their head coach arrived at Hillsborough in October 2023.

Their off-field difficulties have been a major distraction, but Rohl pushed his squad to a magnificent 12th place finish, finishing only 10 points behind the play-offs after coming so near to relegation the previous season.

Team MP W D L GD Pts

13 Norwich 46 14 15 17 3 57
14 Watford 46 16 9 21 -8 57

With Wednesday’s troubles, finding a strong replacement will be extremely difficult, and there may be little prospect for success in S6 in 2025/26.

The Owls are facing a second embargo, and relegation is a definite prospect next season as Rohl plans to leave South Yorkshire.
