Danny Rohl’s stance on Sheffield United job cleared up as questions on Ruben Selles’ future swell

Danny Rohl’s stance on Sheffield United job cleared up as questions on Ruben Selles’ future swell

Sheffield United manager Ruben Selles has had a tough start at Bramall Lane – so much so that even a former Sheffield Wednesday boss has been linked with taking his job.

The Blades have lost five games out of five under the former Reading and Hull City boss this season after he came in for long-term boss Chris Wilder.

EFL Analysis exclusively revealed this week that Sheffield United chiefs will give Selles time despite enduring the worst possible introduction to his new job. On Sunday, Alan Nixon on Patreon reported the Blades boss is beginning to ‘feel pressure to keep his job’, before claiming former Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl is ‘being whispered behind the scenes’ as an option.

Rohl left United’s fierce inner-city rivals Wednesday in July after a turbulent summer of ownership issues under Dejphon Chansiri. Now, new reports coming close from the Yorkshire clubs have revealed Rohl’s stance on taking the Blades job.

Danny Rohl’s next role will not be with Sheffield United

Rohl looks back on his time with Wednesday fondly despite his messy exit and the club’s problems.

It would have been bold for him to cross the Sheffield divide and become Blades boss, and BBC Sheffield’s Rob Staton says it isn’t going to happen.

The senior sports journalist says fans can ‘rule this one out’ from happening, highlighting the German’s strong connection with the supporters, before confirming his ‘next job will not be Sheffield United’.

This follows Nixon’s reports of Rohl ‘not being put off’ by his Owls connection.

What has Ruben Selles said about fighting for his job?

Selles was staying positive after his side’s three successive 1-0 losses in the Championship, with the latest coming against Middlesbrough.

He said: “Well, listen, I cannot control the situation. I will expect to go to my house tonight and then tomorrow go to work and then continue as normal. It’s not in my hands to make a decision. And until the very last moment, I will just do my best and try to do my things.

“When the situation is not in my control, I don’t think too much about what is going to happen in the future. Because realistically, I do as much as I can. At least if I go out, whether that’s tomorrow or if it’s in three years, I will always go out with the feeling that I made the decisions that I want to make.

“Obviously that includes my mistakes, but my decisions were honest and what I thought was the correct thing to do in every single moment. There has been a lot of change and that can take time to adapt. We know we need to improve but we have been competitive in every match so far and it is not like we are going nowhere. We have to keep fighting.”

The Spaniard was dismissed by Hull City at the end of last season despite guiding the Tigers to safety.

The Blades, who reached last season’s Championship play-off final, sit rock bottom of the Championship table.
