Sheffield United manager Ruben Selles has had a tough start at Bramall Lane – so much so that even a former Sheffield Wednesday boss has been linked with taking his job.
This season, the Blades have lost five out of five games under the former Reading and Hull City manager, who replaced long-term manager Chris Wilder.
EFL Analysis exclusively revealed this week that Sheffield United officials will give Selles time despite having the worst possible start to his new job. On Sunday, Alan Nixon on Patreon stated that the Blades manager is starting to ‘feel pressure to keep his job’, before suggesting that former Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl is ‘being whispered behind the scenes’ as a possible replacement. Rohl quit United’s strong inner-city rivals on Wednesday, July, following a rocky summer of ownership issues under Dejphon Chansiri. Now, recent rumors from Yorkshire clubs have revealed Rohl’s intentions to take the Blades post.
Danny Rohl’s next role will not be with Sheffield United
Rohl remembers his time with Wednesday fondly, despite his tumultuous exit and the club’s problems.
It would have been audacious for him to bridge the Sheffield divide and become Blades manager, and BBC Sheffield’s Rob Staton believes it will not happen. The top sports journalist believes fans can ‘rule this one out’, citing the German’s close relationship with the fans before stating his ‘next position will not be Sheffield United’.
This comes after Nixon reported Rohl ‘not being turned off’ by his Owls connection.
What has Ruben Selles said about fighting for his job?
Selles remained optimistic despite his team’s three consecutive 1-0 Championship losses, the most recent coming against Middlesbrough.
He said, “Listen, I can’t control the issue. I plan to return to my residence tonight, go to work the next day, and then resume normal activities. It is not in my power to make a decision. And until the very last moment, I’ll just do my best and strive to complete my tasks. “When I don’t have control over the issue, I don’t dwell on what might happen in the future. Because, realistically, I do what I can. At the very least, if I go out, whether tomorrow or in three years, I will have the satisfaction of knowing that I made the right judgments.

“Obviously, this includes my faults, but my decisions were always honest and based on what I believed to be the best course of action at the time. There has been a lot of change, and it can take time to adjust. We know we need to improve, but we’ve been competitive in every match so far, and we’re not going nowhere. We have to continue battling.” The Spaniard was fired by Hull City at the end of last season despite leading the Tigers to safety. The Blades, who advanced to the Championship play-off final last season, currently sit at the bottom of the Championship table.
