Dean Holden Appointed Assistant Head Coach at Hull City
Former Oldham Athletic defender and manager Dean Holden has taken up a new role as assistant head coach at Hull City, marking another significant step in his coaching career.
The 45-year-old joins the Championship side to work alongside newly-appointed head coach Sergej Jakirovic, who arrived at the MKM Stadium earlier this summer. The duo will now lead the Tigers into the 2025/26 campaign, aiming to steady the ship after a turbulent season which saw Hull narrowly avoid relegation.
Holden, a well-known figure among Oldham Athletic supporters, enjoyed a memorable playing spell at Boundary Park. He made over 100 appearances for the Latics between 2001 and 2005, establishing himself as a tough and reliable presence in defence. His connection to the club deepened when he returned in a coaching capacity nearly a decade later.
He began his managerial journey at Oldham, stepping in as caretaker manager towards the end of the 2014/15 season following the departure of Dean Holden. Despite a challenging run of fixtures, Holden earned plaudits for the way he galvanised the squad during a difficult period. He subsequently resumed duties as assistant manager, gaining valuable experience behind the scenes.
Holden’s coaching credentials continued to grow with roles at Walsall and Bristol City. It was at Ashton Gate where he truly made his mark, first serving as assistant before being promoted to head coach in August 2020. That appointment followed a successful stint as caretaker, during which he impressed both fans and the board with his tactical clarity and calm leadership.
Although his tenure as Bristol City head coach was relatively short-lived, Holden emerged with his reputation intact, having brought through several young players and laid foundations for future success. Since then, he has taken on various coaching assignments, including spells with Stoke City and Charlton Athletic, as well as working in media and mentoring roles within the game.
His move to Hull City signals a fresh challenge, as the club undergoes a reset under Jakirovic. The Croatian coach, known for his high-intensity football and strong organisational ethos, will look to Holden for Championship experience, man-management skills, and knowledge of the English game.
In a statement released by Hull City, Jakirovic welcomed Holden’s arrival:
“Dean brings with him a wealth of knowledge from both playing and coaching at this level. I am looking forward to working closely with him as we build a team that can compete strongly this season.”
For Oldham supporters, Holden remains a respected figure – one who wore the shirt with pride and always spoke fondly of his time at Boundary Park. His latest appointment is a testament to the steady and purposeful progression of his coaching career.
As pre-season preparations begin, Holden’s task will be to help shape a cohesive and competitive Hull City side capable of climbing the Championship table. And once again, the former Latics man is ready to roll up his sleeves and make an impact.
