Decision made as David Ornstein drops huge contract update on Leeds United transfer target

Leeds United have previously been described as ‘front-runners’ to sign the experienced striker.

Leeds United have received a significant boost in their alleged pursuit of Callum Wilson, with reports suggesting Newcastle United would not trigger a 12-month contract extension for him.

Wilson is one of numerous strikers connected with a move to Elland Road as Leeds prepare for their return to the Premier League, with manager Daniel Farke looking to add experience to the squad’s spine.

TalkSPORT reported that the Whites are ‘front-runners’ to recruit the 33-year-old, whose current contract at St James’ Park ends in the summer.

The report states that Newcastle and Wilson have begun conversations about a new contract on new terms, but Ornstein described those conditions as’slightly more incentive-based’, implying a reduced basic income. The former Bournemouth forward will then be left to decide whether to accept or pursue a move.

Newcastle’s decision not to trigger the 12-month extension was most certainly influenced by Wilson’s injury record, with back and hamstring difficulties propelling another miserable individual season. However, earlier this month, the 33-year-old addressed concerns about his fitness.

“I’m relaxed now. Wilson told the High Performance podcast that he is financially solid, so that is not an issue. “I know I can still provide for my family and put food on the table for them.” I know my worth and value, and I’m still so hungry inside that even if I know Alex [Isak] is scoring goals, I’m still irritated when the squad sheet comes out and I’m not starting, indicating that I’m not ready to leave football just yet.

“I’d like to leave football before football leaves me; I’d never let an injury prevent me from playing – I believe I’ve been fit for four and a half months, but I’ve only played 250 or 300 minutes, which is frustrating because you don’t want the last few years of your career to fade away, especially when you’ve worked so hard to get there. It’s all new to me right now, but I’m simply enjoying life, football, and playing with a smile. “What is meant to be, will be.”
