Defensive Rock Returns: Leake Signs On for Another Year at Boundary Park

Jake Leake has returned to Oldham Athletic, signing a contract until the summer of 2026.

The 22-year-old impressed during his loan term from Hull City in the second half of last season, and he has signed a one-year deal with a one-year option.

And, while the end of last season was bittersweet because he missed the playoffs due to injury, he is overjoyed to be back on full-time duty.

“I’ve enjoyed every minute here since I arrived. The club, the fans, and the overall atmosphere have been fantastic for me.

“I’m excited to call Oldham my home now and can’t wait to get started again, help the team push on in League Two, and show what this group is capable of,” said Leake, who made 16 National League appearances for the Latics last season and was instrumental in securing a play-off spot.

“I feel like I developed a good connection with the fans so this just felt to me like the right place to play my football this season.”

Leake was a free agent after being released by Hull at the end of his contract, and Latics manager Mellon was eager to complete the transaction.

“Jake has demonstrated excellent character and quality since joining us.

“He’s a player who fits in nicely with our approach and adds significant strength to our left side.

“We’re delighted he’s chosen to stay with us permanently,” added the Scot. “He has a great attitude, and he’s still a young lad learning the game.

We believe he has a lot of potential and will play an important role for us this season.”

Leake, a Hull City academy product, made his senior debut for Hull in an EFL Cup match against Doncaster Rovers in August 2021 and was named to many Tigers matchday teams during the 2021/22 season.

Before joining Oldham, Leake acquired significant experience on loan with Boston United, Scunthorpe United, and Tranmere Rovers.

During his loan at Scunthorpe United in the 2022/23 season, he appeared 16 times in the National League, scoring once in a 3-2 victory over Dagenham and Redbridge.

He then joined Tranmere Rovers on loan for the 2023/24 season, appearing eight times in League Two before being recalled by Hull in January.

Leake has made over 45 senior appearances in all competitions over his numerous loan periods, including his tenure at Oldham.
