Despite having little to lose, Southampton takes a £6 million chance on Man City.
Due to a lack of options, Southampton will ultimately not regret their decision to let their £6 million acquisition,
Juan Larios, chase a loan opportunity.
Southampton supporters recently saw one of Manchester City’s frequent masterclasses. Not the one they display on
the pitch, but rather through the sales of their young academy players, who are used to recover enormous earnings
that bolster their transfer budget.
And their newest wonderkid, Divin Mubama, is expected to earn a few million dollars for City’s books even though he
hasn’t even spent a year there. Given the amount of money Southampton has invested in their age-level teams, they
may be accused of copying City’s approach in this regard.
I’m not trying to get them to join the Mubama quest, but they have to realise that paying seven-figure sums isn’t a
quick way to put together future teams.
Juan Larios swoop must teach transfer lessons to Southampton
I don’t mean to seem negative, but there haven’t been many good things about the Juan Larios case.
Journalist Matteo Moretto has reported that Larios is going back to his own country to support Cultural Leonesa’s
second-division campaign. Since Southampton also plays football outside of the top division, it is not concerning to
see one of their lesser-known players follow suit.
However, the £6 million that the Saints had previously taken out of their wallets would undoubtedly challenge them.
The Saints will still have to deal with the pressure of finding good buyers for Larios the next time around, regardless
of how well he adjusts to starting there.
In retrospect, Southampton’s financial prospects could not have benefited from rejecting this strategy. Ultimately,
the Saints had very little influence on this transfer, but hopefully they will make up for the money they lost on the
sale of other players.
