Despite their play-off loss, Sheffield United’s board reiterates their commitment to getting the team back into the Premier League.

Sheffield United’s new owners have reaffirmed their commitment to obtaining a return to the Premier League and promised to make sure the team’s play-off final loss “serves as a catalyst to make us stronger in the future.”

Prince Abdullah bin Mosa’ad sold the Blades to the US group COH Sports in December 2024.

Helmy Eltoukhy, co-founder and chairman of biotech Guardant Health, and Steven Rosen, founder and chairman of Resilience Capital Partners, are in charge of COH Sports.

On Saturday (24 May 2025), United missed out on promotion back to the Premier League, following defeat to Sunderland in the play-off final.

In a statement, the board said that, while the defeat “really hurts”, the club had shown “spirit and resilience”.

They declared: “We can guarantee you that this challenging loss will not define us, but being promoted from this level is never easy. This is a setback, but that’s all it is. It won’t discourage us, lessen our passion, or alter our goal of delivering reliable, elite football to Sheffield.

“As guardians of this amazing club, it is our responsibility to get back together, regroup, and refocus so that Saturday’s setback only acts as a motivator to strengthen us going forward. All of us are eager to do that and are sure of our strategy to create a stronger, more contemporary club.

“When we announced the takeover in December, we said we would begin work to modernise every single aspect of Sheffield United to make sure it is able to compete in the Premier League on a regular basis.

“And yes we first need to get there, but once we are we want to end the cycle of boom and bust.

“The reality is that football has never been more competitive and it is changing all the time. Therefore, we are working tirelessly to become stronger in the crucial area of recruitment. We will do this by using data and analytics far more effectively to recruit the best and brightest talent.

“We are also pursuing our ambitious goals of revolutionising player welfare and medical care in a way that leads the industry, greatly improving the training pitch and player amenities, and making sure our academy remains as strong as possible.

“Sheffield United has such an exciting future, and we’re confident we can unlock its great potential, starting with another promotion push next season.”
