In honour of striker Diogo Jota, who died in a car accident in Spain less than two weeks after marrying his long-time

partner Rute, Liverpool has grabbed the lead.

Earlier this week, Diogo Jota’s wife shared a sorrowful post about their recent wedding, writing, “Yes to forever.”

An early Thursday morning car accident in Spain claimed the lives of Jota, 28, a star for both Portugal and Liverpool,

and his younger brother Andre, who played for Penafiel in the Portuguese second level.

Jota married her long-time partner Rute Cardoso on June 22. Earlier this week, his wife shared pictures from the

wedding on Instagram. Her caption on one picture said, “My dream came true.” Jota’s response was, “I’m the lucky

one.” Three small children were born to the couple.

In Cernadilla, Zamora, the two men lost their lives in a car crash, according to Spanish sources. While trying to pass,

a Lamborghini’s tyre blew out, according to the police. Then the car started to burn.

According to the information we currently have, the Lamborghini was involved in a traffic accident and fled the road

after a tyre blew out as it was overtaking, the Spanish Guardia Civil informed the BBC. It occurred early in the

morning, around 00:30 local time (23:30 BST), in the Zamora province’s Cernadilla municipality. The two people

inside the automobile were killed when it caught fire.

“The deaths of Diogo Jota and Andre Silva in Spain this morning have devastated the Portuguese Football

Federation and the entire Portuguese football community,” the statement said.

“The families and friends of Diogo and Andre, as well as Liverpool FC and FC Penafiel, the players’ respective clubs,

have my sincere condolences on behalf of the Portuguese Football Federation and myself.

“Two champions have left us. Their passing signifies irreversible losses for Portuguese football, and we will make

every effort to uphold their legacy each and every day.
