Oldham Athletic have completed a hat-trick of Friday night signings, with defender Donervon Daniels penning a two-year deal.
The experienced stopper arrives at Boundary Park as a free agent following the expiry of his contract at Walsall.
And manager Micky Mellon believes he will bring the leadership he has been looking for.
“Donervon is a fantastic addition for us. He’s someone who knows this level inside out and has the leadership qualities we want in the squad,” said the Latics boss.
“Once I heard he was available there was no doubt in my mind we had to move quickly to bring him here.
“He’s a strong character, reads the game well, and has that bit of quality in possession. We’re really pleased to have him on board.”
A product of the West Bromwich Albion academy, Daniels tasted senior football with loan spells at Tranmere Rovers, Gillingham and Blackpool, where he helped the Seasiders secure Championship survival in 2014/15.
After a successful spell with Wigan, where he won the League One title in 2015/16, he went on to join Blackpool permanently, before spells at Rochdale, Luton Town and Doncaster Rovers and Crewe Alexandra before joining Walsall in January 2022. He went on to make 115 appearances for the Saddlers and captained the side.
“I’m really pleased to get this deal done. Oldham is a club with a proud history and big ambitions, and after speaking to the manager, it felt like the right fit for me,” said Daniels.
“I want to bring my experience to the group and help push the team forward this season. I’m excited for what’s ahead.”
“Once I heard of the interest it was a no brainer for me, the staff sold me on the vision here, and it’s something I really am excited about.”
