In their first game of the KDM Evolution Trophy League Phase, Dumbarton defeated St Mirren B 4–2. Scott Tomlinson and Chris Johnston’s goals in the first half gave the home team the lead going into halftime.
Ten minutes after the restart, Evan Mooney gave the Saints a clean finish to draw one back, but their captain Tony Wallace’s close-range header on the hour mark gave the home team a third.
Before Dominic Docherty completed the goal for the home team, Fraser Taylor struck a fantastic free-kick to cut the gap.
Craig McLeish helped Peter Hartley take command of the Young Saints.
Taylor served as the team’s captain, and the other first-team players in the starting lineup were Ryan Mullen, Jalmaro Calvin, and Mooney.
On minute 19, Innes Clark failed to control a pass from Taylor about 30 yards from goal, giving Dumbarton the lead.
That gave Tomlinson the opportunity to steal the ball from the young defender before advancing and hitting a lovely low finish from 20 yards out that went over Mullen.
After the restart, Saints appeared more improved, but in the first few seconds of the second half, Scott Honeyman nearly gave up a third goal as his header went just wide of the post.
With a clean finish on 55 minutes, Mooney cut Dumbarton’s lead in half, proving that the Buddies’ stronger start had paid off. Flynn O’Brien had a low ball across the box that was precisely weighted for Mooney after Josh Farquhar pushed the ball wide to him.
By removing the Dumbarton defender from the game entirely, the forward was able to cut the lead with a beautiful strike that went past Ollie Ecrepont.
When Clark rose wonderfully to meet a Taylor corner on the hour mark, Saints came very close to tying the score, but his strong header went just inches over the bar.
A minute after that squandered chance, Dumbarton regained their two-goal advantage. When Honeyman drove to the byline, his cutback deflected and spun in midair, where captain Wallace was waiting to head it into the goal.
On minute 69, Taylor’s outstanding free-kick gave the Buddies a second goal to pull it within one goal. Derin Marshall gave the Sons defender a yellow card for a nasty challenge on Mooney.
Thirty yards from goal, Taylor took the free-kick and smashed it into the net via the post. Almost instantly, Dumbarton made it 4-2, and Mullen had to make a fantastic save to block Honeyman’s attempt.
With ten minutes left, Ecrepont made himself big to block Calvin, denying the Saints a chance to tie the score.
The Jamaican forward raced on to a pass and drove towards the Dumbarton goal, but he was unable to score despite displaying his lightning-fast speed.

Jalmaro Calvin, a summer addition, played 90 minutes. Luke Douglas, a substitute, came near twice as the Young Saints pressed for an equaliser.
He ran on to a beautiful pass from Struan Thompson and then volleyed more than a minute later, firing an effort just past of the far post.
But with Docherty, a halftime substitution, on hand to convert a Johnston cross, Dumbarton would complete the scoring to give the Sons the victory and three points.
Despite the disappointment of the goals conceded, it was an excellent learning experience for St. Mirren B, who will play Alloa Athletic in the KDM Evolution Cup in two weeks.
