Dunstable Town Council Celebrates the Success of Calling Dunstable Showcase Event
Funded by Dunstable Town Council’s granted UK Shared Porosity Fund (UKSPF) through Central Bedfordshire
Council, Calling Dunstable was a 12-month project. The project, which aims to assist and build the capacity of
performing arts organisations in the local Community Voluntary Sector (CVS), was commissioned by the Town
Council to be carried out by Next Generation Youth Theatre (NGYT) and BBB group.
A large, free community showcase day at Dunstable’s Grove Theatre marked the project’s conclusion.
The venue exuded enthusiasm from the time the doors opened. Several of the pre-bookable courses, which included
a wide variety of activities like street dancing, puppetry, singing, costume and wardrobe, technical skills, and piano,
sold out within an hour of its publication!
In the upper foyer, guests could enjoy a variety of FREE activities from 3 pm to 6 pm, such as art, writing, circus
skills, a dress-up and photo area, and creative consultancy. The space also featured live lounge performances from
local artists, as well as seller stalls and exhibition stands, all of which remained busy throughout the day.
The final showcase, which took place in the auditorium starting at 6 p.m., was an absolutely amazing exhibition of regional craftsmanship and talent. Every element of the performance was flawless and expertly done, from the
lighting and stage management to the amazing choreography, sound, and presentation. The Limestones, Askahay
Unnikrishnan, Dance Connexions, After Hours, and Stardust Theatre Company all gave incredibly good
performances. A performance by a West End actress who started her career at the Grove Theatre was a unique
surprise for the crowd. Every performer was met with thunderous acclaim from the audience, creating an evening
that will never be forgotten.
Emily, the Calling Dunstable co-host social media competition winner, made a fantastic on-stage partnership with
Darren from BBB Group and presented her first presentation with professionalism and confidence. The crowd was
entertained the entire time by their enthusiasm and sense of humour.
The NGYT and BBB Group-organized event was a great success, attracting fervent crowds and exhibiting an
impressive level of local talent.
People of all ages in the audience, including one woman in her 80s, commented on how much they loved the event
and said they would love to see more events of this kind in Dunstable.
The event exceeded the organisers’ expectations in terms of attendance and success, demonstrating the value of
social media in spreading the news, the strength of Dunstable’s performing arts VCS, and the strength of community
support.
“Calling Dunstable has been a fantastic project, bringing together our creative community and giving local talent the
platform they deserve,” stated Town Mayor Councillor Louise O’Riordan. Everyone adored the closing presentation.
which included Dunstable’s extraordinarily talented residents! In addition to showcasing our town’s incredible
talent, events like this provide our performers more self-assurance and opportunity. We must continue to support
and inspire our young artists, and I look forward to more gatherings like this one to celebrate Dunstable’s
inventiveness and unite people.
“It was a perfect showcase of Dunstable’s creative talent and artistic potential,” stated David Lloyd, co-founder of
NGYT. Seeing people from other groups express themselves, share their artistic talents, and celebrate cultural
relationships was such a delight. Knowing that we have found talented artists with vision, ambition, and optimism to
uphold the Calling Dunstable tradition excites us greatly about the future of the arts in our community.
The Dunstable Town Council would like to sincerely thank NGYT, BBB Group, and all of the performers who put on
a fantastic show and helped make this event a reality.
