East Sussex Road Shut Following Two-Car Collision
A major road in East Sussex was temporarily closed this morning (Wednesday, April 30) after a two-car collision, prompting a swift emergency response and causing significant delays in the area.
The incident occurred shortly before 8am on the A267 near Cross-in-Hand, a route frequently used by commuters travelling between Heathfield and Uckfield. Sussex Police confirmed that two vehicles were involved in the crash, which led to the closure of a stretch of the road for several hours as emergency crews attended the scene.
South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb) also responded promptly, dispatching multiple units, including paramedics and a rapid response vehicle. Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with both vehicles sustaining visible damage and debris scattered across the carriageway.
A spokesperson for Sussex Police said: “We were called at around 7:55am to reports of a two-vehicle collision on the A267. Officers attended alongside colleagues from the ambulance service. The road was closed in both directions to allow emergency services to work safely and to enable recovery of the vehicles.”
One person was taken to hospital with what were described as non-life-threatening injuries. Another driver was treated at the scene but did not require hospitalisation. Their identities have not been released, and police say investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the collision.
Motorists were advised to avoid the area throughout the morning as traffic built up along diversion routes. Local residents reported seeing long tailbacks stretching as far as Blackboys village. Commuters travelling towards Tunbridge Wells and Lewes faced delays of up to 45 minutes during peak time.
The road was reopened shortly after midday once both vehicles were recovered and the scene was cleared of debris. Highways officers carried out safety checks before allowing traffic to resume.
In a statement released this afternoon, SECAmb said: “We can confirm attendance at a two-car road traffic collision on the A267 earlier today. One patient was transported to hospital with minor injuries. We urge all drivers to remain alert and cautious, particularly during the morning rush.”
This latest incident comes amid renewed concerns about road safety in rural parts of East Sussex, where winding roads and high speeds often lead to serious accidents. Local councillors have recently called for further investment in road signage and speed reduction measures along the A267 and surrounding routes.
No arrests have been made at this time, and Sussex Police are appealing for witnesses or dashcam footage from anyone who may have seen the collision or the events leading up to it.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Sussex Police via 101, quoting reference number 030425/267, or report online via the force’s official website.
