EFL charges Sheffield Wednesday over payment delays.

The English Football League has charged Sheffield Wednesday with multiple breaches of payment obligations.

Dejphon Chansiri, the club’s owner, has also been charged with “causing the club to be in breach of EFL Regulations despite his commitment to fund their cash requirements”.

The charges stem from the club’s failure to pay players’ wages on time and in full in March and May this year.

The club and Chansiri have 14 days to respond to the charges.

Wednesday stated on the club’s website: (external) “The club will continue to seek a resolution regarding outstanding salaries due in May at the earliest possible opportunity.

“Mr Chansiri sincerely apologises to all players, coaches and staff affected and everyone connected with the club.”

March’s wages were finally paid in full on April 7, with the club claiming it was a “temporary issue” caused by debts owed to Chansiri, whose family owns the Thai Union Group, the world’s largest producer of canned tuna.

The Thai businessman has been in charge of the Hillsborough team for ten years, and his tenure has been fraught with financial problems.

Wednesday was placed under a registration embargo in both the 2023-24 and 24-25 seasons, and they were docked six points in 20-21, the season they were relegated from the second tier, for violating spending rules.

They finished 12th in the Championship last season, their second season after being promoted from League One.
