Electric car owners confused after sign bans owners from parking in historic nature spot

A significant sign error has stopped electric car users from stopping in a well-known park.

Due to what appears to have been a mistake on the part of the local government, electric car owners are not allowed

to park at a historic natural location.

A sign that explicitly specifies that cars over a specific weight restriction are not allowed to stop in the area has left

EV owners perplexed.
Nearly all electric vehicles are unable to use the bays because of the message stating that vehicles weighing more
than 1,524 kg (1.5 tonnes) would not be allowed.

Only three miles from Norwich City Centre, in the charming Eaton Park, lies the sign.

John Fielding, who owns an electric car, noticed the error earlier this week while out on a walk.

Mr. Fielding responded to the problem by asking, “What has the council got against electric cars?”

Compared to conventional petrol and diesel vehicles, electric vehicles are significantly heavier due to the complex

battery technology they use.

BeCharge experts caution that because the Tesla Model 3 weighs about 1,600 kg overall, it cannot use the parking lot.

The luxurious Tesla Model X weighs over 2,400 kg, whereas the well-liked Nissan LEAF weighs 1,580 kg.

The new signs were fitted after a controversial decision to introduce parking charges earlier this year.

Rates start from just £2 for four hours and became the first park in the city to charge for parking.

Norwich City Council has accepted the sign does present “issues” for electric car owners.

However, officials appeared to welcome electric car owners to ignore the rules if they wanted to use the park.

In a statement, they admitted they would not take action against any EV owners who used the bays until the error

was solved.

“It was always our intention to assess its progress after our relatively recent decision to implement fees at Eaton Park

in order to raise funds to help pay for necessary council services,” a spokeswoman told Eastern Daily Press.

Since we are fully aware of the problems this poses for electric vehicles, part of this will involve examining any weight

restrictions for cars on our signage.

“We would like to reassure park visitors who intend to park at Eaton that we will not be enforcing the weight

restriction on vehicles that exceed it in the interim.”
