Ex-Bradford City Defender Callum Johnson Joins Gateshead
Callum Johnson has made a return to his roots in the north-east after completing a move to Gateshead FC. The former Bradford City defender has signed a one-year deal with the National League outfit, with the option of an additional year included in the agreement.
The 27-year-old right-back endured a frustrating spell at Valley Parade, where his campaign was disrupted by injuries. Johnson, who joined Bradford City ahead of the 2023/24 season, was forced to wait until January to make his long-awaited debut — a Vertu Motors Trophy tie against Aston Villa’s under-21s at Villa Park.
Despite the slow start, Johnson went on to register 14 appearances across all competitions in claret and amber. While his time at City never truly gathered momentum due to fitness issues, he earned praise for his professionalism and defensive reliability whenever called upon.
Speaking to Gateshead’s official club website following confirmation of the move, Johnson expressed his eagerness to kick on:
> “I’m just happy to get started and continue building fitness with the lads. It’s great to be back closer to home, and I’m looking forward to a good season with Gateshead.”
Johnson’s arrival is seen as a solid piece of business by Gateshead, who are aiming to strengthen their squad after a competitive 2024/25 National League campaign. Known for his composed style, strong positional sense, and experience in both League One and League Two, Johnson adds leadership and depth to the Tynesiders’ backline.
Originally from the north-east, Johnson began his career in Middlesbrough’s academy before going on to build a solid EFL career with Accrington Stanley, Portsmouth, and Fleetwood Town, among others. His versatility across the defensive line is expected to be a major asset for manager Rob Elliott’s side.
Elliott was pleased with the acquisition, noting Johnson’s pedigree and character:
> “Callum is someone who’s played at a good level and brings that valuable experience. He’s hungry to play regularly again, and that fits perfectly with what we’re building here at Gateshead.”
While his time at Bradford may not have gone entirely to plan, Johnson departs with the well-wishes of the City faithful, many of whom appreciated his attitude and application during testing circumstances.
Now back on familiar territory, Johnson will be hoping for a fresh start and a season free of injury as he looks to help Gateshead push toward the top end of the National League table.
Fans at the Gateshead International Stadium will get their first look at their new defender when pre-season fixtures begin later this month, as the club continues preparations for another promotion push.
